A home for life?

How important is this when you sell on a horse? Do you sell to a good home or do you look for someone really special for them?

I am selling my yearling (well, trying to bring myself to advertise her) but I'd like her to go to someone who will stay in touch with me. I appreciate that it may not be a home for life , especially for a yearling but as I bred this horse I would hate to lose touch with whoever buys her. It's just so hard to guarantee?

I sold a gelding a year ago and I get updates nd pictures from new owners which is wonderful, but is this a rarity?
 
We still have regular vists from the last owners of my daughters pony as she was there first pony

My daughter loves it as she and the other girl compare notes and have a giggly about the pony

The right person will understand why you wish to have the odd update
 
I think it is very reasonable to ask to stay in touch when you sell a much loved horse. We sold a homebred 4 year old last year - I was very sad to see her go, but she is much better off in her new home and the new owner keeps in touch and has assured me that she has a home for life, but should circumstances change, they will offer her back to me at a fair market value.
I keep in touch, now and then, with 3 of my horses' previous owners (sadly the owner of the other one died 5 years ago) even though I have had one of them for 11 years. It's usually a Christmas card with a photo just to let them know that the horse is happy and still with me.
 
If I was selling a horse I had bred I would like to think the owners would keep in touch, and if they sold the horse that they would pass my details on to the next person.

I keep in touch regularly with both my horse's previous owners (one of which is ones breeder)... It is nice because they are so interested in what they're up to.
 
It doesnt always work the way you want it too even when your positive you've found the best home you can, iv got a post on here to trace a horse i sold last year, recently found out that his 'home for life' owners had been emailing me once a month with a load of lies and my poor boy had been sold on and new owners not told of health issues he has, i now think he's for sale again but dont know how many owners he's had in the past year, the people i sold him to were still emailing me after they sold him as far as i can make out!
 
I like to keep in touch with old owners when we have bought anything and like people to do the same if we sell anything although some promise too then you never hear from them again
 
I'm not good at selling horses , so I have the one I bred for life , I promised him when he was born that I would be with him till the end.
We bought a yearling from horsegroupie who is now 6 and I think she is glad we have him and she can share his success. Don't think we will ever sell him but we should because he is worth a bit now.
 
Obviously there is never any guarantee when you sell a horse, but what I would say is that I genuinely believe there are more good buyers out there than bad ones.

I'd always happily keep in touch with a seller and let them know what the horse was up to, good or bad.

I periodically get an email from the prior owners of both of mine and will update them, plus if I have any special news will let them know immediately.

One of mine I keep debating selling, his breeder knows this and I would always pass on her details if he does get sold.
 
I would say that we have only ever really bought one horse that wasn't thru some sort of dealer, and that is Spot. He came from the breeders and my sister still keeps in contact with them and lets them know how he is doing.

Billy who I just bought did come from a private home, but I never spoke to the owner once as she was quite upset at having to sell him.

I do like to know how the horses I have sold are getting on.
 
I have owned my horse since he was 6 months old, hes 21 now.. We also have his sister, we got her when she was 6 months old too, shes 18.. All our horses have a home for life and if the previous owners/breeders want us to keep in touch then we do, We bought a cob last year but he was from a dealer, hes 7, he has a home for life too.
