O.k the recent thread on who would get custody of your dogs in the event of a split got me thinking.

I'm single and if the worst should happen to me, who would have my boys? I've often thought of this and it upsets me so much but I really don't know the answer :(

My parents aren't 'doggy' they could not walk them enough and they would not be allowed in the lounge let alone on the sofa in their house :D

None of my friends would be suitable either. I know my dogs have the best life possible with me and would be so confused to be split up and rehomed. Tried to discuss with Mum possibilities of posting ad in H&H - sounds stupid I know but what are the options?

Anyone else thought this?

I've given it quite a lot of thought - my mum and sister are both doggy, but would be hopeless looking after greyhounds :o I would expect mine would be returned to GRWE/Cayla and re-homed through the normal rescue channels :(

I hate the thought of that, and cannot believe that my family wouldnt give them a loving home if anything happened to me, but in all honesty I just dont see that happening :( It was one of things which stopped me tending towards suicidal thoughts, so perhaps a good thing I have an unhelpful family :p

I often ponder this, I have recently asked my sister to take my lot and she can have my house and insurance policy, on the condition she keeps all my animals, otherwise Gazey might have 5 dogs, cos she will need to make room for 2 whippets:rolleyes: and im thinking I could pre arrange someone to ship bubba to FLH:D

I have thought about this alot as well:o Officially Henry should go back to the Dogs Trust but in practice I think my parents would keep him, and I hope that is what would happen. I mean, how would the Dogs Trust know if no one told them that I had died?

What worries me more is if I was hurt or ill, who would take care of him then.. When I had half convinced myself I had cancer a couple of months ago:o I was desperately trying to think of what I would do about Henry, but I think again that my family would step in:)

I have no worries, when I go Otto's coming with me, a la Roman Soldiers and their horses! :D :D It'll be a big casket, what with Henry in there too :D

PMSL - don't they bury prized possesions with them too? You'd have to budge up a bit in there what with the pheasies, dead rabbits, toys and beds! :D

Not sure.....depending on the age either of us pop our clogs, I wouldn't like to leave my mum with anything too strong or boisterous and OH is completely non doggy.
My best mate might oblige, even though they are not hairy white things :p or their breeder and his family might help out.

When the children were younger I made a will covering guardianship etc, and my then dogs were in it. A good friend was going to have a couple of them, and the other 2 back to their breeder, with a sum of money also going to each person. The will is now totally out of date, and dogs no longer with me. Hopefully daughter and son would keep our current dogs, I certainly wouldn't want Buffy and Saffy rehoming, and doubt anyone would want Evie. My mum had made a note in her will that if I was unable to have her (elderly) dog, she must be pts. As it happened the dog was already living with me when mum passed away as she had spent the last 2 years of her life in a care home.:(
I do think it is very important to consider our animals if the worst should happen.

Stupid edit time!

Spudlet, I too worry about being seriously ill/injured. Although my son still lives at home he is at college doing A levels so his input to the animals would be limited, he isn't very horse savvy either. Daughters uni course is too full on for her to have time to help with the menagerie, so it really would be a nightmare and not sure how I would cope.:(

Actually this should have read, if me and OH become deceased together:eek:, he would obs keep all the animals should I pop my cloggs alone.

Im happy to keep or rehome anyones dogs that are specifically left to me so mollichop yours are more than welcome to come and live here:D, even spangles:eek:

I'll probably get flamed for this, but if I had absolutely no one available and unless they were young dogs, I would request that my dogs were PTS than sent for rehoming with strangers, especially if it was a tricky dog like the one I have now.

You won't get flamed by me. As I said above certainly wouldn't want my 2 older ones rehoming. Sometimes people are overly sentimental and don't think of the dog. An elderly neighbour died a couple of years ago, she had an equally old norwich terrier, who was incontinent, and had never been apart from her owner. I presumed she would be pts but the relatives "couldn't bear to do that", so the poor little soul went to Dogs Trust, I very much doubt she would ever find a home, she was certainly still there a couple of months later. :(

Where I used to work, the old bloke a whippet. She had a fall and had severe nerve damage, but the old boy refused to have her PTS and nursed her back to health. She was really nervy and still struggled with walking, plus she was fairly ancient. He had it stipulated in his will that she should be PTS after he died, but they didn't think it was fair to her :( I don;t know what happened to her in the end :(

I am duly ashamed....:p

And now I have seen the above about keeping anyone's dogs.... I am writing a will :):):) Obv Amy would've come back anyway, but now you could get triple trouble :D

Im ok with that.....if u want me to have them, I will keep them in event of your death............so no faking it:rolleyes::p
