I would like to give my friend some money (or a nice present) to say thank you for "loaning" me her horse over the Christmas break. She has said she doesn't need any money from me, but her other horse has laminitis and I know money is tight for her at the moment. Apparently, having the peace of mind that her other horse is fully cared for whilst she is looking after her other one is quite enough, but I would like to give her a bit more.

Before I went to university I used to look after the same mare. We called it "sharing" which involved me giving her £40 a month to cover part of her bills, but I virtually had her on full loan. I offered to pay the full whack for her, but my friend said not to worry. I looked after her every day and could ride without restriction. My friend would occasionally send me a text asking if she could "borrow" Ellie, but this was a once a fortnight thing!

I will have had her for about a month by the time I go back to uni so I was thinking I might just give her the usual £40 in a pretty "thankyou" card. However this is a bit boring so do you have any suggestions for a gift that would benefit the horses and her for no more than £40?

Sorry, that was longer than I was expecting! Thanks in advance :)

A lesson with a good trainer?

A nice little luxury item that she would like but might not have spare cash to buy - Anky saddle pad, new pair of leather reins/stirrups/girth/other tack, engraved leather head collar etc?

Something warm to wear - luxury wool socks, sealskinz gloves? These are nice and in budget: http://www.0800sports.co.uk/product.php/65668/13/sealskinz_ladies_winter_riding_gloves_

Nice picture of horse in frame, alongside cash?

Just off the top of my head! Hope you find something for her :)

I did like the idea of the gifts suggested but if your friend is really quite strapped than tbh, I think cash and a nice card would be better...go towards paying some of her bills..

The dad of girl who comes to ride one of my ponies always offers money but I don't feel right taking it so sometimes they buy him a bag of feed so you could do that or a tub of a supplement she usually uses? That way it's something she would need anyway so it's helping out with money situation but she is not actually taking any money from you.

Thanks for all your ideas so far, please keep them coming. I might look into finding a nice picture of her and Ellie as well as her money.

I think it sounds like money would be most helpful perhaps alongside a nice photo of the horse.

I ride my friends horse but she never wants anything financial for it so what i do is go off and buy feed for him or anything that he needs. She is always very grateful as you know how expensive it is at this time of year!! You could perhaps do something like order her some hay etc for both so it is a practical financial gift if you get what i mean!!
