As you will all know by now, Grace is now officially owned by me

She is currently insured £2,500 which is the amount I have bought her for because that was her value when I first took her on in October as a backed but unridden 5 year old.

She is now working really well, and we are looking to affiliate BD before the summer months...

She is out of a TB mare (ex racer who is of unknown breeding as was bought from the sales) by a WB stallion called Junola who used to stand at High Offley Stud (www.highoffleystud.co.uk). Junola is out of a KWPN Class 1 mare who is also a Grade A show jumper, and by Greeton du Rezidal (www.allbreedpedigree.com/greeton+du+rezidal2) who is Milton's half brother.
He no longer stands as a stallion as he badly injured his leg a few years ago, and because he was so special the owners of the stud, they spent a lot of money on stem cell treatment and he is now living the life of luxury as a gelding.

This is a photo of her:

So, I was just wondering how she would be worth on the open market? I am going to change her insurance in the next few days, so this is the reason I am asking...

Thank you, I really appreciate how irritating these posts can be, but I am flumoxed by the market at the moment

She is booked in with an eventer who I used to have lessons with for a few weeks soon to start her jumping training... she has loose jumped, but never under saddle. However, she has been bred to event and apparently has a very natural shape over the jumps.

Personally I would insure her for what you paid for her - you'll only end up paying more with your premiums. Being a mare, and the worse came to the worst then you still have some breeding value. I've just bought a little 4 yr old mare and will be insuring her for what we paid for her. I did increase the value on my geldings insurance (to £4k) but we paid £800 for him but he's now competing BE PN (aiming at novice) has quite a few BD points and is ready to do affiliated elementary after winning his first unaffiliated elementary. He's also SJ'd BSJA BN and Disco. He's probably worth far more on the open market, but I would never sell him but if something did happen then I'd have a little more to go and spend on a new horse. I don't think it's worth increasing value, and when we did we had to send evidence such as test sheets, a print off of his BE record and had to stick to under £5k or we would have had to have paid for a 5 stage vetting as well.

Thanks S_V... that's really helpful. I haven't had her vetted because she has been with me 5 months and is absolutely fine. I am thinking of having a 2 stage, but sort of think it will be pretty pointless because she can do the work, trots up completely sound, and is flourishing being in work.

By the sounds of it she should be worth much more than you paid very soon!
Going back to the original question I wouldn't be much surprised if I saw a horse like her priced at £3.5- £4k, but then I have only recently been watching what people ask for their horses. You will probably get a better advise from more market savvy posters

I only ever insure mine for the price I paid even if they were youngsters at the time. Have to prove why they are worth more etc if you insure them for more.

It completely depends whether you want LOU and mortality. If you are only looking for vet fees then keep the price low and this will keep your premiums low.

id probably insure her for what you paid at the moment - when she starts competing BD and racking up those points then you can think about having her value/insurance reassessed x

Thanks everyone... i have not added LOU on to it because I am a bit dubious about this to be honest, and my other mare does not have it either. I didn't know whether people insured for the price of the horse or the price they bought it for. Hannah is insured for a bit more than what I bought her for but is worth a lot more than that (or she was when she was competing anyway). But I couldn't be bothered producing all the documents and having a 5 stage done because she is never going to be sold.
