Am currently loaning a mare, with a view to buy.

She is 11 years old, 16.2 shire cross (but not papered) former broodmare.

She is sweet to hack and very good in heavy traffic, however quite green in the school and has no idea what leg aids are!! dont believe shes jumped or anything like that, so a bit of a project for the winter.

Shes good to handle, great around youngsters, but not great to box or clip, ok with blacksmith.

She comes with tack.

The current owners paid £2,500 a year ago.

What would you offer???

I dont really know but have been looking at some adverts lately and you could probly get a reasonably well schooled horse for 2500,did you want to do alot of schooling with her or want more of a happy hacker? considering shes so green in the school wouldnt pay anymore than 2500 with all tack.

I'd of thought £2500 was a fair price for her, lots of people would want a safe hack thats good in heavy traffic and pay a premium for her.

On the downside if she's a heavy shire type people might be put off by her size, if she's something lke a shire x tb then I think she'd be worth the money. A horse that won't box easily can be worked on and lots need sedating for clipping

£2000-2500 incl tack. Generally speaking that type are nice sensible types that you can do most things with at rc level, so would probably sell. Perhaps offer £2000, saying that she'd have a great home and not go through any stress. They will probably be wanting at least what they paid for her, but would have to go through the hastle and cost of advertising and showing her to people if you dodn't buy her...

Has she progressed since the current owners bought her? If yes what has changed? If not then I would just offer 2k and see what they would negotiate :)

Unfortunately not, well at least I dont think so. From what her owners have told me - Her owner is a lovely lovely lady who unfortunatley had a fall and consequently lost confidence in the mare, so little was done with her.

Snowysadude asked how much progress they have made with her - if they haven't made much progress, find out why and why are they now selling her? At 11 she may be set in her ways and have learnt bad habits! I think Maesfen has a fare point. :)

You need to think what is she worth to you.....to me she is worth not much as i want a youngster to event, to my mum she would be worth £5000 as a happy hacker.......she'll be worth different amounts to different people.:(

I am soooooo not helpful am I??????:o

Sorry:p

yeah, she has always been pretty good on the roads. with me soo far anyway, buses, lorrys tractors etc no problem.

She is a very heavy mare, and I think it would intimidate people, she can be nervous around new people and I think that would put people off, shes always been fine with me, we seem to have struck up a partnership quite quickly and I know thats something you cant buy!!

I am not really much into schooling, I'd like a safe fun hack who will pop the round the XC a couple of times a year, only 2ft3 type stuff, nothing exciting, maybe a bit of hunting, pleasure rides etc.

I know the things that she lacks are things that could be taught

I think from talking to the rider, its a case of green nervous horse and green nervous rider, the rider had a fall, and I dont think shes been back on since, another lady has been hacking her this summer, I dont think any focus was put on schooling/improving her.

I think from talking to the current owner she was allowed to get away with quite a bit of naughtyness, but Ive never had any problems with her at all.

It sounds as though you get on pretty well with her owner, so I'd just lay your cards on the table and say that you like her, but don't have a great deal to spend. Ask them how low they could go to ensure that she stayed with you in a happy home...

Even if you have a rapport with this horse, don't let your heart rule your head. Its a real buyers market, and you would find something else that you would have a rapport with...

She hasnt progressed with current owner
(no increase in worth)
She is now older than when owner bought her
(decrease in price-IMO)

So I would be paying less than what the owner bought her for.

Is she including rugs aswell? If not, that is a cost I would be subtracting from the price you pay.

I would offer no more than £2000, with tack AND rugs.

But thats just me.

If she is quiet and a weight carrier, good to hack and in traffic then I would easily pay £2500 for her, you try to look on line for something similar, there are far worse horses out there for more money. Plus you know her that is worth something.

Thats exactly the situation - having lost my TB I've been a bit emotional recently and dont want to get caught up in that, It is a buyers market, and whilst I like the mare alot I do think there are plently of other good horses looking for a home right now.

I paid £1700 2 years ago for a shirexcob who is basically her but the finished article, been there done that, 110% in everyway and came with full wardrobe. (he was also11 at the time) I know that was during the height of the resession, and quite frankly I think I got a bargain!! but I do think anything above 2K is too much for the mare in the current market, if I went in at 1500 and negociated would that be reasonably do you think?

They have given me the rugs they bought for her but they where knackered, saddle isnt great quality. I have rugs and saddle of my own which fits so would probably say that I didnt want to include there in the sale?
