After my previous post http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/2083715/an/0/page/5#2083715

My mum and I have discussed the possibilty of buying him, but would it be worth it?? We would keep him until he is about 4/5 then sell him on.

so how much do you think he would be worth in 4 or 5 years time? I know it's difficult to asses but to make it worth while we need to know

Our other problem is that the Frenchman won't budge on the price, becaus of his colour
tongue.gif
....and unless we are prepared to pay full price and go and get him, then haggle when we are there...playing on the fact he hasn't been handled since he was born, has been left out in the field, isn't wormed, microchipped...etc, then thier is no point going because we cant garantee that he will budge on the price

My dad said paying 450€ doesn't bother him if its going to be worth while
tongue.gif
So what do you think?? Should we go ahead or not??

(He is being saved from the meat-man as owner is 85 and has decided that if his horses can't be found home then they will go to The Man

Thanks

ps: you can be blunt and truthful, i don't mind.....just would be good to hear other peoples views

pss: this sounds like we are just buying him to make money.....I can assure you we are NOT, we just can't afford the youngster that will take me from Hemir to competing at a higher level, so have decided to buy a 'project youngster' instead

Please dont think badly of me...have had some pretty nasty comments about what my plans are

Well it certainly isn't anything special. If he's destined for the meat man - then £400 would secure him.

Then as to the future - who knows, will he even make it to four or five?

sorry to lol .....the old man may be 85, but he is playing you!!!!!! i think what he is asking is a bit on the higher side of what he is actualy worth...and for you to make any money you would have to make a quick sale, other wise mounting keep costs will eat any profit......wait down the lane for the meat man and offer him a quick profit.....because i dont think the meat man will offer much, good luck what ever you decide
wink.gif

he looks like a sweety, I'd pay that for him. What you are planning sounds reasonable to me, sounds like he will have a far better home and future if you take him

Ok, where is the horse based and how much is he roughtly in £'s??

The owner seems a bit harsh to not accept an offer when the only other place the horse will be going is the meat man! If you are going to go and see him then take enough cash to buy him (if u decide u want him) then try an offer with the cash there it sometimes works!

How big is he likely to be? the price of 4/5 yr old depends on size, temperment and competition record, if he makes a good RC/PC alrounder i would expect him to make between £2,000 and £4,000 depending on factors mentioned earlier

Quite a few horses end up with the meat man even if they are good horses....just because the owner can't be bothered to look after them over her so its not because he's got probelms it is honestly because the old mand doesnt have the energy to look after them.....this is meat money over here
blush.gif
it's roughly £300

clipertyplop : why do you say he is playing me??Thankyou for being honest though

AimeeC: that is what im worried about, They think he will only make 13hh maybe a little more

I don't understand why this one is so special ?
I assume you are in France so he is local ? He is pretty but so are lots of youngsters that could end up as dogfood. If he grows to less than 14hh you have a very limited market to sell him on.
He looks very pretty, and would make a lovely project, which is a good reason to buy him, but don't expect to make any money.

Because where i am his colourings are like goldust
blush.gif
You don't get many around here...and if you do they are normally in the shetland form!!! Yes there are lots of youngsters around but they are nomally bay or chestnut...and normally trotters that have run and are not fast enough or aren't good enough for the trotting races....:p

Im not expecting to make a lot of money.....would be nice but i do understand that what i've written sounds as thought that is what im trying to do
tongue.gif
He is just a project and for me to learn everything about youngsters (have helpd out with lots before, even helped to brake them in) but never done it myself...so parents didn't want o spend money on something fo me to ahve after Hemir to find out that i couldn't cope with doing it myself.....last year i had NO support, but have just recently the support has come out of hiding and have loads of it!!! Everyone who knows me(and who knows about horses) has said that this is what i need to do next
tongue.gif

Also the youngsters that i have found have been over the 1000€ mark and that is how much i spent on my horse....

Thankyou for being truthful with me
smile.gif

what i ment by the "old man playing you" is that if you dont buy him the ponys fate will be the meatman .....i have fell for that one more than once ....heart overtakes common sence...but to be honest it sounds like you have already talked your self into it lol....and if you treat it a learning curve and not for making money then i am sure he will make a stunning little po ....
