Morning

Its that time of year where I try to come up with excuses not to sell my home produced horses. This one was always going to be a sell on as he’s event bred. I could do with some advice re: price and whether to sell as is or produce further. Sorry for too much detail re: him but I think it’s the important stuff.

Bought in Ireland at 2 weeks and shipped once weaned. So full history known, 16.3hh gelding 2020 3/4 bred (Finacial Reward). Very lightly backed last year by Kate Davis who did a huge amount of ground work and it gave him such a fantastic confident start. He’s now come back into work and is just super. Very level headed and straight forward with excellent natural balance and the Irish fifth leg. Just starting to jump him and not wanting to tempt fate but we feel he’s a natural, he’s not one for a touching a pole so far. He needs more top line on him and I want more muscle on him but this will come from work between now and when we advertise rather than just bollocking food into him and slapping on sode reins. He’s hacking and has stood while we leave him and come back with nice manners. He is as genuine as I’ve found and a total open book re. Vets, teeth, back saddle lady etc.

Ideally I would like a keen amateur to buy him that will produce him up the levels and love him forever. We’ve really done our very best to give him the best possible start and just want someone of the same mindset to take over.

We are going to do about another 4 ish weeks hacking/schooling and fittening and then take him xc schooling and the usual dressage test and fun rides. Do we advertise at that point and if so at what price ish or do we produce further? Thanks for your help and all opinions welcome and questions.

He sounds lovely, when I was looking 2 years ago similarly homebred, just backed horses were being advertised to me for over £12k. Personally I can’t bring myself to pay for the promise of brilliance, the future success which might happen…. I want to pay the animal as is in front of me. So I guess the more he is proved the more you can ask…but that’s still an ongoing commitment for you financially. I feel your dilemma and realise I have been no help whatsoever 😂

In the right sales yard, providing he passes the vet, has reasonable confo and movement and is easy enough on the eye. A quick sale will see you £15k. Holding out a little and with a little more presentation made, £25k isn’t out of the question. If he actually comes on really quickly and has some presence, you might see a little more.
If selling from a private home then you could prob know approximately 20% off those figures. He sounds like the sort of horse someone like Nick Campbell would sell

You have been a help! I guess his value now is he’s suitable for an amateur to produce and is very straight forward. Last year I was approached by clients of mine wanting to bring him on and hunt. I felt he was too nice for that job and needed more time to mature, so I turned him away instead. So whilst money is important I’ve turned it down so far as he wasn’t ready and the home I didn’t feel quite right.

Thank you for replying. Nice movement and naturally balanced, 7/10 conformation I’d say. Confident with vetting etc and tbh he would be a sales yard dream as he’s so straight forward. He was very very very ugly as a youngster 🤣 hideous a skinny gangly daddy long legs. Slowly growing into himself but looks super under saddle and floats. I will have a look at Nick Campbell, there’s no way we will sell via a sales yard but interesting to see what they’re producing. Thank you

I have nothing useful to add on price, but the horse my friend bought from you (and that I am still taking ALL credit for 'finding'!) is an absolute corker. He's a total gentleman, which is handy since he's now topping 19.1hh!
Surbie .. are you serious Bozza Bo Jangles is 19.1?

Yes he’s a very special boy that one and he’s deserves all the love she absolutely pours into him. I love to tell the story of our rescue kitten falling in love with him and hoping onto the back of him during a schooling session 🤣. I’m off to measure 19.1 against the wall now 🤣

Why don’t you continue his education in the direction you d like it to be..enjoy his journey and he may end up selling himself if you know what I mean.
We will certainly do that and we are all having a blast with him. My experience is in dressage though and producing really nice mannered all rounders that lean towards dressage. This leaping over things is ridiculously terrifying to me but luckily we have a lovely rider for that. We have 3 more also in the queue .. I’m running out of excuses 🤣.

This is what I was looking for last year, I had a budget of £15k but had to go above this to get something amateur friendly which also had above average paces, was jumping low fences calmly and could pass a 5 stage with back and neck xrays. The horse I bought was a gangly 4yo with no top line but he's already looking better this year. I tried a few 4yo at pro dressage yards which already looked like mature horses, most were btv with a pro rider on board and some had spur marks, actual injuries not just rubbed hair. They didn't suit my riding and gave me a weird disconnected feeling. I would say £15-20K with nice paces as well as the jumping and no vices/handing issues.

Oh she really did .. his names Boston a dappled grey boy - she used to send us the most incredible photos of him!

Yes - she had a check with a stick not long ago. He's an absolute behemoth! We need a taller mounting block...
You sent me down a Bozzie shaped rabbit hole today looking at all his photos .. the largest fluffy ears I’ve ever had the fortune to sit behind 🤣
