We should be moving to the farm in 7 weeks time, subject to the builders being finished in time.

There is a part of the house we are going to set up as a B & B, just two large rooms with a bathroom, able to sleep up to 6.

We know how much we plan to charge for basic B & B customes, but we are thinking of offering horsey B & B too.

There are miles and miles of bridlepaths to ride on and we are ideally situated for showgrounds in Newark, Lincoln and Nottingham.

What would you consider a fair charge per person/per horse for one night at a time?

We charge £10 per horse per night for a stable and grazing. We provide haylage at £2 per night - ad lib. And then bedding is available on site at £4.50 a bag. All our stables have rubber matting. We have a holiday cottage available to rent and we do have some guests come down with their horses to enjoy riding on Dartmoor, but we have found that most horsey people actually enjoy leaving their horses at home and having a break without them.

Why not look in the BHS Bed and Breakfast for Riders, that would give an idea of prices.

If you are offering riding holidays make sure you have ridden the routes. I have been on a Bridleways holiday which was great and we knew the route was OK and had been designed especially for us riders. As well as the OS map we had detailed written instructions and it made for a very nice experience. /we knew that we had the best route, showing the nicest scenery and avoiding less nice places.

On the other hand some friends went to a place offering B & B for horses and it was plain that the hosts had done no research of routes at all. The riders were let loose with an OS map, the bridleways weren't well signposted and one route the host had suggested wasn't even a right of way and was closed off. The riders felt disappointed and that they had a wasted weekend - and have warned off all their friends.
