I have the opportunity to purchase a youngster - no pics I'm afraid but here are the details

Around 18 months old standing at around 13'2 at the moment, possible make 15'3 according to a quick string test (I know that not accurate but its all we have to go on as don't know his parentage) He is a coloured, has lovely markings and seems to have lovely paces, nice natured chap, has been gelded. He hasn't really done much, can be led in halter to field and brought in, can lift his legs and groom him happily but is quite bargy and rude at times but a fast learner when worked with.

Hes meant to be a cob however, hes quite fine but may fill out - as I said I don't know his parentage- has good confirmation, is straight and has one wall eye.

I would want to do some in hand 2 year old classes with him this year as I think he would do well, possibly either bring him on to sell or if he makes my estimated height, to keep and do some dressage/jumping/XC with at riding club level.

I have an offer price in mind but its nowhere near what is being asked for him so wanted an impartial opinion.

Thoughts?
 
OMG that makes mine a monster - mother 15.3, father 15hh, 8 months old, 13.3hh!

Parentage however is known on mine: ex decently bred TB by Elite graded homozygous coloured stallion.

Mine is homebred but I'd be anticipating considerably more than £400 for him if I were to sell.
 
It's really hard to say without seeing a pic, but with no breeding I personally would be prepared to pay about £500 at the most. I think 15.3hh may be pushing it, my youngster is expected to make 14.3-15hh and was 13.2hh at 18 months (I'm no expert though - I'm sure they vary quite a bit).
 
I'd pay up to £650 mainly because his breeding is unknown. You can pick this type up for £200 or less at auctions at his age.
 
Thanks for your thoughts. I was thinking £500 max given hes done nothing and the current climate. Asking price is £1200 offered to me for £1000. I thought perhaps i was ridiculously under estimating his value as have never bought a youngster before but it would appear I am in the right ball park.

To me the thing that hugely restricts the price on this is the unknown. At 18months and unknown breeding it's really a finger in the air to what build he'll end up like in a few years. Also the resell value, I do think it puts a bit of a cap on it.

Is he passported OP?

That's a silly price for something with no background imo.

What are you willing to pay? I paid asking price for good breeding but unhandled. She was probably worth far less in the market, but I was happy that I wanted her, so was prepared to pay asking. I think it comes down to naming your top price (in your head) and walking away if negotations don't come down to that or below.

Check before offering a price. Some agencies charge a substantial amount for initial passporting after 6months and this may affect your purchase price, you'll also need to microchip etc if not. Or it may affect sellers if you want him done first.

It would make a big difference to me talking this price range.
 
How much do they want for him???

As for height. There's no way he'll make nearly 16hh if he's only 13hh now at 18 months old.
 
Offer £150 and tell them that's probably all he'd make at market. £500 is way to much for a mongrel that can do nothing for another eighteen months, thats one and a half winters keep.
 
i have full breeding known on my filly... shes literally what you describe (except for wall eyes and shes a SHE :D )

shes beautifully coloured - bred for the show ring (shes friesian warmblood x coloured), i bought her for £550 - shes going to make about 15.1hh

her half sister (who is lovely but imo mine is more unusually marked and really eyecatching) was/is up for sale at £1500-

Going off what ive seen - espeically coloureds id say around £5-700 is about right :)
 
Thanks guys. I will give her my offer of £500 and let her mull it over. If she doesnt accept then no biggie. Am not actively looking to buy another horse this is just an opportunity that arose and from what you all say hes over priced which is what i thought when i heard the asking price. I appreciate your input guys x
 
Fwiw I bought a similar sounding youngster, only taller and finer (he's currently 16.1 at 19 months!) and ended up paying £700 which was close to the asking price. However out of that the breeder had to pay for his jabs and CHAPS passport, as we agreed the sale when he was only 6 weeks old. So IF he is up to date with vaccinations, and has a passport, AND is gelded then maybe go up to £600 max? I doubt they'll sell him anywhere near what they're asking so you can probably afford to wait and see.
 
Would be surprised if he made that height and more surprised that the owner has no idea of breeding!!

I would not pay a penny and go find something which you can put a breed name to and have a better idea about height!!

The fact that it can walk in a head collar at 18 months does not add value ;)

Good luck in finding your dream - this all sounds WWAAYYYYYY too murky for me

i think thats a wise move :)

i paid for mine and i recon i got a good bargain judging from comments from people who know her and what her sister is selling for

but....i put a lot of hard work into her - leading/loading/in hand hacks, wearing tack etc - so if you can put that ino them imo that makes them worth the money??

i also had to passport/chip mine too! so if this isnt done then definately suggest this to them too as thats about £70-80 anyhow isnt it?

I can't make a comment about price as I haven't seen him, but I would say regarding the lack of verified parentage, if he has good conformation, a nice character, good feet, beautiful paces with the bonus of attractive markings, then I couldn't give a fig where he came from.

Give me a sound, workable, sane horse any day over a weaker one from well known lines.

Just look at whats in front of you and decide how much he's worth to you.

At 18months it would make a difference to me - not for great bloodlines, but to know the chances of it making the size/build I was comfortable riding.
 
I bought my cob at 18 months he was 13hh and at nearly 5 he only stands at 14hh so he may not make that height.

On the other hand I've just bought at 15.1 unknown breeding unusual coloured. Hes only had tack on and lounged once. I paid £2k for him last week and she had 3 others waiting to view.

You'll have to decide what your willing to pay. I paid £800 for my cob in 09 and he fantastic I'll never sell him. Good luck :D

I'm rubbish at horse values cos I've only ever bought cheap ones but am quite encouraged that there are still ones under 1 k! We have a similar type 15.2. He was 13.2 at 18 months but probably not been fed much. Friend then had him for a year and he grew to 14.3, my farrier said then he'd make 15.2 but we didn't believe him! Kept growing and filling out until aged 6. He is out of 14.2 welsh cob by unknown coloured sire.
Vaccination, passport and microchip/freezemark costs add up so good point for negotiation.
Also a sale now saves them cost of winter keep immediately...
 
First question - do you like him
Second question - does he have a passport and is upto date with vacs
Third question - does what he will grow to make a HUGE differance to you
Fourth question - do you want to re-sell him
 
I think your offer is reasonable and he won't make what she thinks he will. 15.1hh tops I think :). He will be a good project and has a nice temp albiet needing firmer handling.

She won't get that for him in a month of sundays and soon she may want a quicker sale and might take your offer. After more livery, advertising costs etc it all mounts up after all.

Give offer and leave it ;) x
