I was just pondering this one today as I have no idea about these sort of things!

16.2hh full TB mare. 3 years old. Chunky type not the fine sort of TB. Lovely to handle will let you faff about to your hearts content. Backed and riding out, not done much in the school, popped a cross pole, hacking out in company - on quiet roads and off road, not phased by tractors, dustbin lorries but hasn't been truely tested in busier traffic. Cantered in company, on stubble fields and up gallops. Only downside can be a little grumpy and has kicked out at others a couple of times out hacking. Has been known to put in a buck mainly on canter transitions which seems purely baby-like and balance related - not worrying at all. Not massively fit and needs to lose some weight. Is a pest on the horse walker and stands still and stops it!! Good to shoe, has been clipped, loading needs improvement but nothing that shouldn't be sortable - very food driven!! Has generally been a star to start.

How much do we reckon?

hmmmmm this is a tough one..... alot of people buy TB's cheap from the sales, do abit of flatwork and sell them on for £3,000 ish.... when really you could go to the sale, pick up the same type of horse, pay £300 - £800, school them yourself costing you only in your time, or send them to a professional for £100 - £500, saving a hell of alot on buying a TB privately! Harsh I know, but is a very true tale. I have many mates what have fallen into this trap, paid well over the odds for very green TB's. Then my other mate went straight to the race yard and bought one for £300. In just under 2 years of owning him, she has got him up to Pre-Novice level in BE eventing costing her nothing but her own time and riding, and cost of keeping him of course!! xx

Yep, I'm well aware you can pick up very cheap TB's. This one came over from ireland in the summer - she's going to be in training next year for hurdles or pointing (I think) depending on how much talent she shows. I know the actual answer is "whatever anyone is willing to pay for her - that's how much she's worth" but I was just wondering as a "normal horse" (not for racing) what she would be worth-ish currently.

*She's not actually mine, I ride her sometimes and as I've always been "into" cobs and natives I'm genuinly interested in how much people reckon for a TB as I haven't got a clue!!

Bearing in mind it is a tough market at the minute, a £3,000 TB may sell in time, but, at the same time, for a 3 year old, may stay unsold for such a price. I would personally say, private sale wise, £2,000 and under is more likely to get interest, if selling was the only option your friend wants to do. You are very right, people will only pay what they think it is worth! My mate's looking for a horse at the moment and the majority for sale are TB's, it's a very competitive area to be in!

Ah, this is not a "for sale" price - it's more of a "how much would a realistic offer be" price!! Not that I can afford it but the I was more wondering what would be an offer price that wouldn't offend the owner!! The horse isn't for sale but if the right price was offered then it could be possibly. Not sure how much is was bought for unbroken but that price is obviously all about the potential!

ETA: thank you for your replies - it's really interesting, TB's seem to be in a little niche of their own!!

I paid £2000 for a supposed 6yr TB, in reality she is 4, very green but very quiet excellent in traffic, lovely nature, good to shoe, clip load etc loves jumping but needs working on. I think i paid a little too much TBH, £1500 would have been more realistic, am hoping in a few years she maybe worth up to £3000.
