If you rented some land from someone and also looked after one of their horses, and that horse kicked one of yours, would you ask for some money off the rent to cover your vets bill? Sorry, bit vague, but just wondered what you lot think?

accidents happen, keeping horses together means there can be kicks etc.
i personally feel that by accepting having your horse (not yours personally, just anybodies

) in with others, you are accepting those risks and the vets bills that go with it.
so no, if my horse was kicked by another horse then i would pay the bill myself.

No, just as if mine kicked another I would not expect a bill. -It's horses & sometimes they dont get on.

It would only be different if their horse jumped into my field & then kicked mine, as it was their fault for not making their field secure enough.

Call your insurance company & see what they suggest.

Nope, if my horse gets kicked i would never ask for help witht he vet bill.. Horses are horses and will fight and will get injured.. People who do ask me for help with vet bills get laughed at.. i think its pathetic.

No. Not unless theer was a reason for the kick. (ie new horse in field that I was un aware of, or broken fencing)

accidents happen - unless there is negligence then no-one can be responsible for it.

i can see why you could think that it might be fair to ask for a contribution. With anything of this nature though, it's sensible to turn the situation around and ask if you would be happy to pay for any damage your horse might do to another horse. The fact that you rent land from these people is immaterial - if there are 'mixed-ownership' horses together in a field, any accidents that may happen have to be dealt with in a fair and practical way. It has to be pretty black and white, and so therefore the usual action is that the owner of the injured horse pays up. That is why adequate insurance is so important.

reverse the situation-had your horse kicked the owners horse, would you pay the vet bill? I would pay my own bill and just get on with life. Horses are horses are horses. M.

I had a similar situation a while back, where my horse kicked another. I was asked to reimburse her competition fees as her horse was stiff on the back end the next day!
I flatly laughed at her and said that if she didn't want her horse to get kicked, put it in a field on her own,
Horses kick, that's what they do. If you turn out with other horses, you must expect the odd bump or scrape.

I would clam from your own insurance company.

The only time insurers may try to mitigate their loss would be if there was true negligence on behalf of the owners of the horse that kicked your horse and proof of evidence of it having done so. But this is very unlikely.

If you put horses in the same field together you must expect them to kick each other.

I had a vets bill pushing 1k last year - horse got kicked in field, fractured cannon bone...no way of knowing which horse, and even if i did, horse are horse, and I chose to put mine out in the field. Insurance company ( no names, but i have a feeeling you may know who i mean) wanted owners namesof other horses in fields but i refused. I wouldn't want to be held responsible if my horse got into a quarrel with a field mate....what am i supposed to do , take him to one side and have a quiet word?!

insurance company paid up (eventually) but I changed them anyway for being t****

I must admit, I do normally have a policy of only turning my own horses out together - then if they do kick each other there's no other party involved! But I do completely agree with all your comments, I was just unlucky in getting such a huge vets bill !!

Our pony was kicked in the field whilst out on loan. She fractured the tibia and had a fairly hefty vets bill as you can imagine. The loaner paid the excess on the insurance, but only because the pony had been in her care at the time, wouldn't have considered getting owners of other pony to pay. Insurance company never suggested it either.

Many years ago my mare kicked another mare in the field. The mare on the receiving end was up for sale. This was on a livery yard, both of us just liveries. The owner of the mare asked us to contribute to the vet bill, as our mare was seen to kick the one who was for sale, her value may be reduced and she had had to take her off the market for a week. We said no, she threatened to sue, we said go ahead. The eventual outcome, nothing. Anyone who tries to get you to pay towards their vet bills is trying it on in my opinion and should be ashamed of themselves.

No, otherwise where could you draw the line when it comes to livery stables etc, the important thing is making sure every horse is insured.

You can make every effort to help prevent horses getting injured by kicking but once it happens then it really is not anyones fault so why should they pay towards the treatment.

However would be miffed if my horse got kicked due to someone feeding them bucket feed/treats in the field if one particular horse is prone to getting jelous and too bossy etc but still that is what you have insurance and common sense for, unfortunately not every has it.
