A Jerry update, and the results of my little experiment

Right I THINK my experiment worked, but may be a coincidence, but see what you think.

I spent ages thinking, after Sundays little fiasco, about Jerry and his issues. I came to the conclusion that the only thing different between home and away as far as tack/bitting goes was the fact I put his competition saddle cloth on which is a lot thinner than his normal Rambo pad. So put both on to compare and sure enough the saddle sat a little low without the Rambo pad on. Not low enough to be a problem on the flat but could maybe be causing him discomfort when jumping.


So went to the jumping clinic tonight with Rambo pad and a riser pad on, and he was perfect, didn't put a foot wrong. No head tossing or running at the fences, he was even quite careful.

Also my trainer was amazed at how much better his canter was, and just in general how much better balanced he was. He hasn't seen him for a few weeks as been having more lessons from Ali.

So hopefully this is the answer to the issues, but will have to take him somewhere to test it, so tempted to take him to the Jays on Sunday, what do you think?

Excellent. It is amazing how much of a difference these things can make. I used to put a polypad on for hunting my old cob thinking it would be nice for him, and he used to go backward and be horrid, but i thought was just excitement, until I hunted in a normal numnah one day and he was foot perfect. The pad made it that slight bit thicker. Fingers crossed the difference stays!

thats ok, i was like "oh no maybe shes hurt her leg" glad it went well.

I gues its a feasable thing as he does seem almost uncomfy by throwing his head as you are not fighting against him, fingers crossed

I just kept going over in my head what could possibly be different and eventually came to the conclusion that it could only be the numnah. Saddle fitter did say it may need padding out a bit till spring, which I have done at home, but for some reason my brain stopped working and I used my standard saddle cloth out competing

I was thinking back to when Rosie was a youngster. I could only ride her with a gel pad sandwiched between a thin cotton numnah and the saddle.

If I took the gel pad off she humped and bucked me off!

She wore that gel pad for about 5yrs until she toughened up and now she can wear any saddlecloth or pad. Couldn't ride her without anything underneath as that would be death!
 
gosh i hope that is the answer, and that he goes back to jumping nicely, cos he really is lovely. good luck at the weekend if you go anywhere

Crumbs, I really hope that is your answer. Really does sound like it could be! I had the opposite trouble with an Arab mare I was riding over here. Her owner told me to put a riser pad under her saddle as she felt her back was dipping with her age. She went do-lally the minute I tried to get on her and once I was on, wouldn't go forward and was almost unlevel. I got off her and sent her round on the lunge, and she looked fine, til I got on again. Finally decided to take off the riser pad, and she walked on perfectly.
 
That sounds like a cheap solution to your problem! Hope it works. Jerry looks a super horse and you deserve to have fun with him.

Think my trainer will be there on sunday too, so she can see what she thinks of him in action if he is no better. Plus have new car which can tow two so might pick up my friends mare on the way as she could do with getting out.
