One of the brood mares isn't looking 'right'. Owner been worried about her, she is stiff behind, but that is not unusual as she suffered what sounds like a horrid accident as a youngster. But she is 'wet nappy walk' stiff, so worse than normal. I've tried to re-assure owner saying the cold weather effects the joints more.
BUT, the mare is also oozing sticky sweaty fluid from her bum cheeks!! I'm not kidding. Her vulva and tail are dry and clean, but the oozy mess is sort of coming from where the fillet string is attached to her rug, and running down the back of her legs. Most odd.

Anyway, due to this, owner wanted me to 'double check' the field for any possible aborted feotus'. Sad job. I was hoping I didn't find anything, and luckily I didn't. All sorts of imagines run through your head, how big, sex, colour, markings, whether it has been semi eaten by fox etc...
The vet is coming later, mare has eaten up well, but in the meantime can anyone shed any light on this 'sticky stuff'? She is due to foal early April.

Only time I have ever seen anything like this it was due to skin damage; actually a chemical burn from a tin of something chucked into the horses' field.

What did the vet say?

Hope she is still safely in foal.

Not sure if it would come up that high in the leg but we had a gelding that got lyphengitis (not sure on spelling) and that was very similar to how you discribe the weeping of fluids from the skin.
Don't know much about it but hope it helps..

Is it anything like what Charlimouse posted on 31/01/12 in veterinary section of this forum. Post was called :-

Anybody ever seen anything like this before? PICTURES *Also in comp rider

Just seen this, and yes, very similar. Vet has given the 'ok' still in foal, given a does of bute for a few days regarding her stiffness, (cold effected - will ease when warmer) but totally baffled by the oozy stuff.
Still Strange!

Sounds like serum oozing out, likly to be a skin infection..... rain scald, mud fever, sweat induced sore between her buttocks/gigot type thing.

Did the vet leave you with A.Bs? or just anti inflamatories?

My horse got something similar to this, she has a significant allergic reaction to clipper oil. I'm sure your mares not been clipped, the allergic reaction caused lymp fluid to start leaking out of her body, both on the areas that's had been clipped and those not. Yellow lymph fluid even began leaking out of her heels.
She had to have a large steroid injection and anti biotics. Not easy with an in foal mare I know.....
Good luck I hope you sort it.
