A little bit annoyed...

So, one of my fellow liveries hung their soaking wet rug up to dry today on the rug rack. This was fine...except that for some odd reason someone had left my stable rug lying on the floor underneath it! As opposed to say, hung over the stable door, or even sitting to the side away from the water.
This meant that when I got there the stable rug was soaked through! Luckily, I have a spare (really just a fleece type thing) but still it was a bit inconsiderate of them.

The reason my stable rug was on the floor, and not inside the box, was because my horse was brought in before I got there tonight due to severe rain. Happy that she was in, not so happy about her stable rug being left on the floor. Also not happy that she was left standing in a soaking wet turnout rug - the wet had started to seep through to her back but her neck was halfway dry, so I know she was standing in her box in a wet rug.
I kind of wish that whoever brought her in had taken off her turnout rug, or at least made sure her stable rug wasn't left under where the wet rugs get hung up.

I know it wasn't the YO who brought her in, since they text to let you know if they are bringing in early, etc. So I guess someone was trying to be helpful but didn't realise about the rug getting wet.

Moral of today's story: make sure not to leave rugs where they will get soaked!

It's a bit of a puzzle as to who brought her in - I know it wasn't the YO, still have to talk to the other liveries. I'm glad she was brought in but yeah, the rug on the floor bit was daft.
The YO leaves stable rugs inside the boxes when they turn out in the morning. If they bring them in, they change the rugs. And text to let owner's know; it's the yard policy.
I keep a laundry basket for shoving the stable rug into to keep it well away from the rug rack. The basket is just outside my horse's box.
I think maybe whoever brought her in didn't realise and just dumped the rug out of the box so my horse wouldnt trip on it - fair enough. But then someone else hung a wet rug up above it and didn't move it. Either that or the wet rug was already up and the stable rug still got put there.
It just seems odd that anyone would have left it where it was. Usually we are all really careful of stuff like that - I guess someone had a "doh!" moment, or something.
Come to think of it, it's weird the YO turned them out at all today. Usually in this sort of weather, they are kept in. I don't know. I will chat to everyone tomorrow and see if I can find out what happened:)

Isn't it a bit strange that the wet was soaking through her turnout rug and making her back wet? Don't you think that the rug is leaking? When stabling I generally left the turnout rug on overnight, after re-seating it, as do many. This means they stay nice and dry and toasty under the rug and you're not putting a cold rug back on in the morning. The water shouldn't seep through at all so there should be no harm in leaving a horse in the stable wearing a turnout rug.
I think whoever hung their dripping rug up above a rug that was laying underneath it was very inconsiderate. Ditto if it was the other way round and someone dumped the rug on the floor.

Id just be happy someone brought your horse in. Perhaps the person who hung the rug up on the rack didn't even notice your stable rug on the floor.. or whoever did pop it on the floor had other things to do, like their own horse.

I think the fact someone was kind enough to bring in for you I would not be moaning about anything at all.. the fact she was left a bit damp in her turn out won't kill her. I really can't see what there is to moan about and if I was you is be more concerned about either getting a new turnout or reproofing the one you have...

I don't get it, your stable rug was in it's box as stated in first paragraph yeah?

Then it was on the floor under a rug rack yeah?

But someone took it out of the horses way and it ended under rug rack out of it's box...

I am so confused.

Excuse me if I'm wrong, but moral of the story would be to get a rug that doesn't jump from it's box to the floor under a ringing wet rug rack.

Or maybe in my case get your facts right before assumptions....

I think what the OP meant is that when the stable rug is taken off in the mornings the rug is left inside the stable ready to be put back on the horse when it's brought in. Whoever has brought the horse in early has then moved the rug from inside the stable to under the rug rack. (but the OP also has a rug box outside her stable which it could have been placed in instead)

Anyway for what it's worth OP if this was someone doing you a favour and bringing your horse in because of the weather being bad I think it would be pretty ungrateful to then start moaning about the rug getting wet. Accidents happen and I'm sure it wouldn't have been done on purpose. As for the turnout rug being left on...unless you're paying for the service I wouldn't expect this to be done tbh

Well if it was a favour, I'd just be glad my horse had been brought in, I'd rather it be brought in standing in a wet rug than still outside in the wet rug getting wetter.

Why is your rug box situated under the rug rack anyway ? I don't get it sorry, if the rug had fallen off the box as it wasn't in there, why is the box under the rack ? What's someone else bringing in your horse got to do with the stable rug not being in the box, presumably it would have been put in the box in the morning when it was taken off, sorry if I'm being a bit thick

If you moaned to me I'd say well I'll leave your horse out then next time

Sorry if this sounds harsh but tbh it is not down to another livery to change your horses rug. They brought your horse in as a favour to then expect them to change your horses rug is a bit off IMO. It is not anyone elses fault that your t/o leaks. I imagine the person that brought your horse in out of the rain didn't know the rug leaked. As for changing the rug when wet at all seems strange to me, why not leave it on horse to dry out? Also getting a new t/o rug that doesn't leak sounds like a plan :-)

Um...I haven't moaned at anyone and no, my rug basket is nowhere near the rug rack at all! Which is why it's weird that my - or anyone's - stable rug could have ended up under the wet rugs! And it's not like the people at the yard to move rugs to daft places so that was weird too.

I just wanted to talk it out and remind others to watch where they leave their stable rugs in wet weather. I think having a waterproof basket for stable rugs is a good idea...but obviously it can still go wrong:o

As for her turnout rug, the wet bit wasn't at the seam; it had seeped through the panel itself. Surprising and annoying, but that's horses - and our weather! I am getting it reproofed of course. But the fact that that can happen is why I don't leave turnout rugs on overnight.

See, this is what I get for talking about my feelings, lol! Going back to bottling them up now...stupid counsellor told me to open up about the little things!

To clarify: I was annoyed about the stable rug being left under a dripping wet rug. I would never do this to anyone, regardless of how tired or busy I was. At the very least, I would kick the stable rug into a dry corner. So there - pulls face and runs away to eat Jaffa cakes...

Yeah, I think I read your post the way you meant it - someone very kindly swapped the rugs over, they may have placed the stable rug on the rug rack (for reasons unknown as you have a rug box by your stable but hey ho, probably best intentions). The stable rug either slipped off the rack onto the floor, or got left on the floor. Someone (else?) then hung up a wet rug on the rack without looking around and thinking "oh there is a rug under there that this wet rug will drip on".

Happens all the time, too many things to do / too much on your mind, obvious when you think about it and they probably didn't even realise. Doesn't make it any less irritating for you though.

Got any jaffa cakes going spare? :)

Actually, you know what?

I am angry about the stable rug! If I had done this, I would have had my ears chewed off by the other liveries and probably the YO too! So, sorry if you think I'm whining, but I'm pi**ed off right now.

And rather surprised that this thread got to 2 pages...

Sure, help yourself! Anybody done random crazy stuff on your yard lately? Maybe it's to do with the sun and its changing bioelectric field!

Bless!! Don't worry about it, we all like to vent sometimes even if in the cold light of day we were not quite so in the right! I get wound up about all sorts of things hehe XX

Good for you! I'm sure your counsellor would be proud of you! :D

S0d anyone who thinks you're whining, you got this off your chest. Better than bottling up small resentments.

Cheers and Jaffa cakes to you!
By the way, my OH was allergic to horses for tears too. He was glad to see that other people had been able to get past it too:)

My favourite one is about gates. I have the end stable on an L shaped block. It's right next to the hinge end of the gate into the yard. You wouldn't believe the amount of people who open the gate to bring their horse in and just leave it swinging - so it hits MY horse if she's tied up outside her stable.

I never leave a gate swinging after I walk through it. Even if there is no one around and no horses to be seen! I think horses should learn that when you walk through a gate you then turn and close it, helps a lot with ridden manners too!

Even if they want to get their horse in asap they could then go back and close the gate so it doesn't hit my horse couldn't they? The number of times I have come back from the tackroom to find my horse patiently standing with the gate lying along her pinning her into the corner is well into double figures.

***dons tin hat***

nearly lunchtime anyway....

To me my allergy situation's a bit of a miracle. It was so severe that contact with horses could (and did) result in emergency ambulances to Intensive Care Units. And now I groom and muck out with the best of 'em. :D

Ouch, your horse must be very calm to put up with random gates! Ali would be through the roof at that:rolleyes:
Yes, OH still can't believe his luck either!

I know when I take a wet (normally muddy!) rug off my horses I tend to carry it away from my body in front, so I'm not getting covered! They're big rugs too, up to 7"3 so I tend to trip over all sorts on my way to the rug rack as I can't see where I'm going!! Is it possible this happened? The person just didn't see your rug on the floor? I tend to just do the front up and jump up to hang it, not really looking under where the rugs hanging.

I would love to to believe this is the case but there is literally no way not to notice if there is anything under our rug rack. It's ok though; I got to vent on here so I will just keep calm and carry on at the yard.
Although the YO will probably quiz me on why the horse was wearing a different rug last night, lol!
