I don't usually post reports as i feel slightly inadequate compared to the proper comp riders, but i'm still gushing about my boy yesterday!
We fancied a trip out to borrowby show (thirsk) as a family for a change as a nice break from work- we've all been manic atm. So we hired a horse box and entered my boy in the BS classes 1m/1m05. We've only done 4 BS events due to me being tied up with my a levels, with mixed results BN DCs then last time out in January eliminated in all 3 classes!!
So to say i was anxious was an understatement! We have never competed on grass and didn't have stud holes in his shoes for studs, so we were slightly winging it!
Warm up arena was carnage- no change at BS! For a start i was wearing a tweed, so people thought i'm an eventer so treated me like something they'd stood in but secondly i was wearing a body protector (parent's ruling
) so looked like a complete novice in an arena of non body protector wearing very smart pros! So had quick walk/trot/canter popped a fence and trundled in. Chester jumped an awesome clear around scary fillers too- which for him is a massive achievement as he is super spooky. Waited 30+ horses for the jump off and went in with the attitude of being happy with a DC. Jumped a lovely clear in the jump off which was put up to 105. Took him back to the wagon and and went to eat my lunch but was very surprised to hear our names being shouted over the tannoy at coming 8th out of a 40+ class. dropped my sandwich and jumped on my poor horse (who was fast asleep) and went to get my money. There were a lot of VERY smart horses and lots of pros there, one being a 4* event rider so i was over the moon with the boy!
Here's some photos of the 1m:
Onto the 1m05- warmed up nicely, didn't get chance to jump a warm up fence due to the arena being hectic so just went in. Jumped a clear round with just one hairy moment coming into fence 7 a double and my boy was so careful and saved our bacon pinging over it and getting us out of a deep spot!
here are the 105 photos:
showing how scopey he is to get us out of trouble!
The 105 J/O- never even thought i'd get through to this but they put it up to a full 110 which i've never jumped at a comp before :S And to cap it, the hunt were doing a display much to my horror! Before i got chester he'd hunted all of his life so he became VERY pumped up and quite strong! Jumped beautifully- the bigger it got the better he was jumping, until the dreaded fence 7 double where the hunt began to blow the horns as to which i lost all control into the fence and had the front bar down
We regained composure (or what we could scramble together) to jump the rest clear so just an annoying one down.

this last fence was huge and going down a hill!
so overall over the moon with my boy and he had huge pats, kisses and cuddles from all members of the family! What we were all very impressed with was his attitude, he was so calm (fell asleep inbetween classes) and willing which is a total revelation for a horse that was v.v.v anxious and worried when i first bought him! Also got an awesome pro picture which is now pride of place in our living room!! Now planning the rest of our shows for the summer and hopefully going to have a crack at a newcomers before uni in october!
Thanks for reading, tea and malted milks for those that got this far!!
