A little HHO success story

a while back a teen commented on here about wanting to get some more hands on experience with horses

Amazingly it turns out that they live just a couple of miles away and have been helping here since

L clearly was able to do some yard tasks before she arrived here but has grown enormously in confidence, taking no nonsense from my pony and has shown a level headedness beyond her years. Today while out for an inhand walk my pony's bridle came clean off (he had just been clipped and I was unaware as to how much his head had shrunk as a result which meant the bridle was now a little too big - lesson learned) and even though there was a car waiting to pass on the narrow road L stayed completely calm and instantly secured him with his reins

L was also the second person ever on my just backed pony and hacked him out last weekend :)

We are planning shows for next year. I never thought I would enjoy having someone here to help but its been really enjoyable and interesting so far and the pony is certainly benefitting from the extra attention

Next weekend L and her mum are in charge as I am away for the weekend so it will be like owning her own pony for a couple of days :D

What a lovely story. Sounds like you've both benefited from the arrangement, and what a fantastic opportunity for L. Long may it continue :)
 
I rarely come on here these days but have logged in purely to reply to this post-what a lovely result/update and long may it continue. ( I bet L is in seventh heaven!)

Alas Clodagh i cant get her interested in the chickens, she has eyes only for the ponies so we have lost a potential fellow chicken addict :D

Keep at it...maybe she will weaken when you have fluffies in the new year!
 
That's such a lovely result, I wish I could find someone like you to help my daughter in Scotland. She is fab with my horse but only gets to see him in the holidays .
 
So lovely to read such a heart warming post :-)

I also have a young woman who comes to my yard & spends time with my daughter's 22 yr old semi retired pony. It's given him a new lease of life & her invaluable experience. She has learnt all about horse care & her riding has come on in leaps & bounds & she is also riding a couple of our 4 yr old ponies for experience.

When i was a child, this sort of arrangement was quite common, it seems that most people are too busy these days to spend the time helping the next generation of horse people gain the 'horse knowledge' that we so often criticize new owner's for not having.
 
What a lovely post and a lucky girl getting to learn with some good old hands on experience. She will make a great owner in years to come :) Hope you both continue to enjoy your ponies so much and have a lovely weekend away :D
 
What a lovely post!
I too have a young girl come to my stables to help out. She's one of those kids that you can honestly say if anyone deserves a pony - it's her, it's her life, totally dedicated. She only lives a stones throw from the field and her mums a wonderful lady. I'm hoping they will buy her a pony of her own next year.
