sooo, im selling my horse, for various reasons (well one reason!) there is a man who may come to see him this week from quite a long way away.... after speaking to him he said...

he would be happy to buy him without trying him, as long as he can see he goes well - so he can be sure that he will get to know the horse, and get him to go well in a few months, he believes in taking things very slowly ect, and not being put off by first impressions riding under pressure!...

he ALSO said - that if he wanted him, he would want him vetted at a particular vet about 2 hours away, and if he passed vet, he would take him straight home, but if he didnt, he'd bring him straight home - is this not totally ridiculous?! and am i right to have told him that he would not be able to do it??

Surely a vet would normally come to you??

I would insist that the vetting was done at your place - the horse should go nowhere until money has exchanged hands!!
 
Ahh I see what you mean about vet , I took it you meant the vet was two hours away and would come to you, I would be willing to travel my horse to the vendors vet but I would take it and would charge them for transport
 
thats what i said doolally! think hes rediculous - when i asked why he couldnt get the vet to come to me, he said he couldnt afford it - the horse isnt exactly cheap, a couple of hundred wouldnt make a huge difference. its a vet in Glouster, and he lives in monmouth, so its not exactly local for him - he also said he wouldnt be that bothered about probs that showed up on vetting, and hed prob ignore them unless they would affect the horses job (he only wants to hunt really) so why cant he use a vet thats not as good, but will vet the horse perfectly acceptably?!

anyone else think its odd he doesnt want to ride it?!
 
Seems a little unusual! Maybe hes a bit funny about people watching him ride. Its a bit risky to buy a horse like this as you don't really know how its going to react to you.

The vetting thing is very odd, when I bought my boy, I got him from a place about 2 and a half hours away, and requested a vetting from a practice which covered that area.

However, sounds too dodgy to let this man take your horse away on the promise that he would bring him back if he didnt pass the vet. And would you really be comfortable selling him to the man?
 
good plan zig zag - but i may just avoid this man - hes not come accross particularly genuine, and when he called he basically told me stories for 40mins, he barely asked me about the horse...hmmmm?!
 
i know bragglesby - what i was thinking...id like to see him ride, and thats exactly what we'd do - get a recommendation from another vet/connection about good vets in te area...its such a minefield!!
 
I hate people like that- treating your horse like a car or some other commodity with no feelings. Sounds dodgy! I would be really worried by someone like that and not comfortable selling to him.
 
goodo - glad im allowed to go with my instinct on this one - if he cant afford to spend £100 on traveling, how can we be sure he can afford £**** on him, my friend said knock off £100 and pay for travelling for vet - i see no point in knocking off any amount of money because he cant aford it...
 
its tricky - he seemed very genuine, and was easy to talk to, i was very honest about the horse, and he seemed a bit charming in the way that he was saying 'how refreshing it was' and how he 'really appreiciated the honesty' and blah blah blah, maybe he was just conning me so i thought he was more genuine to me....i hate this selling malarky....
 
I agree with all your other posters. This sounds dodgy and so it probably is. I'd suspect either a dealer or someone whose cheque would bounce or someone who hasn't got a clue and will be screaming for his money back inside a fortnight and you would get a damaged horse back. Steer clear and save heartache.
 
Conmen are always very charming and 'genuine'. This sounds fishy.

I wouldn't sell to someone I hadn't seen ride. How do you know he can ride at all? You might be condemning your horse to some idiot pulling him around and hurting him.
 
he may be a conman but on the other hand he may just be odd a friemd sold a horse last year which was vetted away from home near their place ,but look up the vet he is talking about and spaek to them see if they know him ect and get the man to pay for horse with a written agreement that he is returned if he fails vet in same condition he left in and that he pays all costs and go with them to vetting
