your dog isn't 'naughty but nice'. your dog isnt naughty at all. what your dog is is untrained, unstimulated and thats your fault.
If you have an 8 month old thats still messing in its crate and in the house several times a day, thats your fault. If you have a 10 month old that is excessively mouthy because you leave it alone for 8 hours a day in a crate, thats your fault. no amount of throwing treats at it is going to house train it or make up for the fact its in solitary confinement all day.

I need to leave that FB group!

Aargh! One of the reasons I try to avoid any pet dog FB groups!

this is a training group with a very well known agility coach-although mainly its a marketing conduit (fair enough). I joined because some of the games looked fun and useful-especially for a not 100% confident dog like Fitz. can't bear it any longer though! and if I see one more baby snuggled right up against a dogs mouth I will scream.

I am very grouchy today!

I used to be on several Malamute sites and go on the breed walks that were local to me but had to stop due to the amount of unruly untrained dogs we met with owners who simply said they are that way coz that's the breed, er no they are that way coz you haven't trained them to be any other way. Also got really annoyed when anyone posted on the rescue sites saying they were interested in getting a Malamute and wanted more info on what they were like and all the replies from self proclaimed experts were how difficult these dogs are and definitely not for the faint hearted!!!!

Problem is though that IMO this is the biggest problem by far with horsey people too, not just dogs ;) How many people blame their horse for being naughty when its simply had bad training or is just totally misunderstood :( Wish people wouldnt blame their animals and look at themselves first!

Literally that is my pet hate dogs/cats or any other animal next to a baby/small child why why why would anybody do that.

but shouldn't puppies train themselves :P

I've had my new rescue dog (2 yo collie) for about 3 months now. Her old owner (she was rehomed via a charity but directly from her last house- luckily after 2 years she had finally decided she could not look after her) messaged me to ask how she was doing. was she still jumping up and also stealing food?..... It took a matter of days to teacher her she has to sit to get attention- not jump up. She does occasionally with shear excitement raise her front feet off the floor- but she is ignored until she sits nicely. She was also apparently jumping all over the sofas and stealing food from her childrens hands 2-6 year olds! she now lies down on the floor when we eat and although she watches my baby very closely (he is 8 months and very messy with finger food) she does not get near him (obviously I am there) and just waits for a few crumbs to fall on the floor if she is lucky. I am not trying to boast at all- all I have done is reinforce boundaries and also she now gets exercised every day (the previous owner got her as an 8 week puppy and she left the house about 3 times to 2 years!!!) just had access to a garden.

too many people underestimate the 'work' needed to get a well behaved happy dog.

also, I am not against crates when they are used properly, but I think too many people use them to contain dogs for too long to prevent damage. But if there were exercised and stimulated enough they should not need to be locked away to prevent damage.

you're not wrong! but I am so dismayed at such basic needs not being met. that 10 month old has been in a crate 8 hours a day, alone, since it was 6 weeks old.

I have left the group and feel so much better lol.

That is brilliant that she is doing so well now Pippox. It is amazing what interaction, exercise, stimulation and consistent boundaries can achieve with many unruly dogs.

I think crates are great for house-training puppies and to teach them to settle and to cope for short periods on their own, but they can quickly become a prison and be used in an abusive fashion by some.

e.

Same with Mrs Spaniel - She had been allowed to get away with murder. First day she was here, she jumped up onto my lap and then onto the table to help herself to my plate. She had no recall, stole food, ate shoes, post and tried to dig a hole in the carpet.

I text her old owner to tell her about her first week and she replied with "haha she's a tinker isn't she? She does love a shoe to eat."

Now her recall is pretty solid, I can leave her at home pottering about the house while I'm at work without worrying about things getting destroyed, she won't touch my food if I leave a plate lying around while I am distracted and although you get the "I'm a starving neglected dog" stare, she sits in her bed while I eat, she only jumps up onto the sofa with permission (although I have caught her a couple of times in the morning snoozing on it! :D)

I sent a video of her to her old owners after 6 months, by which time she had recall installed, could sit and stay, no longer wrecked the place and left food and she was shocked at the change, but all she needed was boundaries and an outlet for her energy levels!

Exactly Karran- I don't know how my poor girl survived for 2 years with nothing to do, they were lucky she was not more destructive.

there also seems to be an assumption that some breeds only need a small amount of exercise- especially smaller dogs and more'designer' types. but just because they don't want to go running for hours like my border collie, it doesn't mean they don't need stimulating. My MIL is one of those owners though- she has 3 new puppies (yes you read that right) in the space of 2 months, a german spitz and 2 shetland sheep dogs. I personally don't know the breeds well, but although they may have less energy than a bc when they are older- currently they are nuts puppies! she loves her dogs and they have her around lots and a big house- but she is hoping by getting the 6month old spitz done he will calm down a bit.... i was trying to subtly tell her he may need more exercise! they will no doubt get away with murder and cause chaos.

i also avoid the horse facebook groups. too many people wanting a 'project' for next to nothing, but as long as it doesn't spook and is perfect to handle for example!

I was out riding one day and there was a horse and rider in the distance, I thought I was seeing things as there seemed to be something with them but I couldnt make out what it was. They eventually passed us and the something was a clipped out yorkie-covered in mud and having a ball. He went hacking with them (and the horse was a large hunter type) all the time apparently.
