..I am happy!

We had one change, swaped one for another.

Ok, so first appointment was at 9. He was a lovely horse, with excellent breeding-by Vetcha, out of a Cavalier mare(who was sold by the Billy stud) He used to have a Cavalier name, but that changed and Pippa F suggested he have a Billy prefix!
Anyway, stats: Chestnut geld, 16.3hh, 7 this year. He has 6 points, done 2 1*'s, including Aldon which I hear was very tricky. She gave him a ride and a jump and I liked very much. The distance for the double was very long but he still popped it beautifuly(he has a huge jump!). So I got on, and loved him! He had a really lovely jump, very easy and flicks his back legs out. Then had a gallop and he had a huge stride. They liked my riding, and I liked the horse so that was great. So moved onto next horse...

2 hours later...arrive at the next yard. Lovely little mare, 16.1 by Mayhill, v.compact. She has 27 points, a great record at 6/7. Then last year she did her first Intermediate, but had a fall near the end and hasn't competed since. So I got on after watching her rider. Totally different to the other one, compact little ball and lovely paces. Her extended trot was to die for! Then had a jump, again very different, bouncy and nice. She is more like poney and I think I will bond v.quickly with her, but maybe not as scopey as number 1.

Number 3. Hillocks farm. Looked at three in the stable, one was full sister to CK's Idol Hero and they had high hopes for her, but was maybe a bit too good. So got on one, by P. Rising, rising 7, 5BE points. Flatwork was ok, nice but hadn't done any lateral work yet! Jump was nice, quick with front feet but odd. I got on and his flatwork was nice. Jump felt amazing, he was very quick to turn etc, much better thn it looked. Quite interesting, as its the second P.Rising horse I have ridden and it's quite different to the other. So I also liked him!

In the car we had a good discussion. We like all of them but the main issue is price. All are obvisously negotiable, especially first two as they need to sell. Number 1 is the most expensive, but we thought we could get him for £15,000..then, we get a call. The owners have just had news that someone else wants him ,who said before us. People would rather sell it to us. Problem is, others are offering close to the asking price, which means we have to offer a bit more than we wanted, so not good. They wan't us to make a decision tonight, but we will wait till tomorrow.

So, by tomorrow I will probably be buying a horse! Most likely 1 or 2.

Look on the links and photos and tell me your thoughts! SAorry I didn't get photos but we cam-corderd it and thats at home, and I'm at school. If I get one, I will take photos of video for you.

Cheese and wine if you got this far!

Sounds exciting! 1 has the best record, as reflected in its price, but I like th 2nd one aswell.... the last ones record aint great tbh! But I guess you've considered that

First horse sounds best.

Third horse - I personally wouldn't bother buying a horse that has already had a sore back - having had a couple of rubber balls who never have those sorts of problems I can't be bothered with it if I can help it. Also, rising 7 and no lateral work?!!

You really want a horse that's tough because it can be as talented as you like but it's no good if it is injury prone or has the odd weakness.

I would be concerned about the limited competitions for the mare in the past couple of seasons and would expect the price to be lower as a result.

So, that leaves the first one, which sounds super and I suspect worth the extra money. Would be useful to see a few more photos of him!

i like the sound of no.2 - something with a bit of personality

but looking at the pics it hasnt got a great jump

it seems to have a history of faults in sj as well. do you know why it only competed twice last year?

no.3 has lovely jump!

Call me a cynic, but isn't that the oldest trick in the book? !!!!

I would be a little cautious of number 2 having a fall and not competiting again, it does seem very odd!

Regards to number one, are you sure the owners aren't just telling you they have someone else interested to stop you putting in a low offer? It could be a very crafty plan of theirs! It may just be me being pesimistic, but all things should be considered!

I actually know the owner of horse number 2, used to share a yard with her, although haven't seen her for a while - mare is totally lovely when I saw it!

I totally understand what you are saying, but they are lovely, honest people and they did say this morning that another girl was interested, once she sold her pony.

Number 2-had an injury, now totally fine and jumping big, just didn't get round to eventing again.

3-had a bad back, which it why it has a patcy record.

Anyone fancy lending me some dosh for number 1 then?

I prefer no 1. Wouldnt touch no 3, as hasnt managed to get round all last season. Do like H. Madonna though on their website. Is that the one they have high hopes for? Difficult to tell bout no2 with the 1 photo. Good luck, let us know how u get on.

Yep, thats the one! Think its even better than Idol Hero!

I was about to create a thread to c how u got on!

1) I don;t know why but I thought that horse was older from the advert lol but that is a clear winner but maybe overpriced in this climate??

2) would be interesting to c if that would pass a full vetting if it hasn't competed since falling(thouh it was going well)

3) wouldn't touch espec for that kinda money...!

Aldon wasnt a difficult course for a horse which had done 10 novices and another 1*
However, he sounds nice. Dont be drawn in because they say they have someone else and pay more than you want to- you dont know the sellers and they may be making it up....

I don't get it, why keep on looking at horses that are so out of your price range?

Anyway, no.1 looks the best bet, the other two I wouldnt touch . Some horses are just never the same again after a fall

Please please please don't touch number 3!! A variety of reasons but primarily its crap XC record. May be a bad back but even if that's true it's been going on so long it may now have psychological issues as a result which could take ages and a very good jockey to get over. Also, it has R/E with Graham Law riding it if you check back some way - he is one of the best and least recognised jockeys in the country so if he had problems that would ring HUGE alarm bells for me!

I agree, on paper 1 seems by far the best option but if it comes down to money can't really help you there. I would be wary of paying loads for a horse that had had clearly a nasty fall and hadn't been out and proved itself since...

Good luck anyway
smile.gif

wow you are so lucky
smile.gif
i dont really know anything about horses of this standard, but i like number two, such a shame about the fall and i would hesiate at buying anything that had potential problems in the pipeline. number one is a big strong horse who strikes me as the most potentially talented, number two maybe for novice experience, number one maybe for intermediate, but then i dont know how far you want to go
good luck in deciding

i'd want to know how/why number 1 had 40 xc penalties at Aldon, for that much money, must admit! sounds a very nice horse though, other than that.
kind of agree with the above, if it's out of your price range, why joy-ride?!

I watched no. 2 skip round Belmont N a couple of years ago- she was super.
She's more in your price bracket so I'd choose her and have a 5 stage vetting with full set of x-rays- spend the extra money on that

It 'apparently' had trouble at the water and got halfway over, then went the long route at the second last, but got a 20.
I see what you mean, but they offered us a price, and they need to sell, so we could work on that, all was ok. Now someone else wants it so we have to decide today, with a higher price.

Dont fall for it. Take the chance- stick to what you think the horse is worth (which is not over 15k) The other people may not exist.

personally No.1 does nothing for me on the photos- neck set on a bit low and personally not what i would look for. #obviously still a bit green with the stops at Aldon so for me, £20k is way OTT.

i like No.2 myself- nice shape over a fence, but after a fall i would like to try her over a few xc fences/ water etc and you should be able to feel whether she is backing off or hesitating over the fence.

No.3- no thanks. as someone else said Graham Law is a fabulous rider and if he has issues i would be wary. who knows how long his mental problems will continue from the bad back?

No 1 too much IMO and don't like No 3 at all.
I like the sound of number 2 best.
I'd ignore the R at Salperton. And to attempt a horses first Int at Aldon last spring was crazy IMO. But the fact it jumped clear SJ is very promising. As the ad says the rider is older, getting married and leaving the country. She only did a few in 07 as well.
But as everyone else has said ask to try some xc or xc type fences or hack somewhere so can go through water. And get full vetting and ask many details as possible and ask to speak to vet who treated the horse.
Do you know which fence they fell at or any explantation of how the horse fell.

What happened with the gorgeous one you saw before Xmas with Tuffy, I thought that looked fab and that you were very keen. Don't know anything about these 3, except jockey on no3 is not fab XC, although Graham Law definately is good.

I really liked him but he is jsut perhaps a bit too good for me at the moment, and I would take a while to get doing what I really wanted. He was lovely though!!!
