A little Word of Warning

My horse had been on box rest for 10 days. As I was turning her out, she had a fit, leaped in the air, took off and kicked me full on in the chest, she knocked me flying and I acually got knocked across the yard!!! She was wearing a bridle because I knew she would be a bit hyper! She has NEVER even lifted a leg to anyone in her life before and is very nice natureda was totaly out of character so we are putting it down to sheer excitement. I wasn't wearing a hat or gloves or body protector or anything

. I feel VERY lucky not to be laid in hospital. She could so easily have kicked me in the face or head! Luckily (or not so lol) I just have a very badly bruised chest!!

Just want to say if ever I am turning a horse out again that I think may be a little naughty I will be wearing a hat (I will everytime I take her down the field from now on!) because it could have been SOOOOOO much worse! Just want to try and make a point of how unpredictable even the nicest of horses can be!!! She truely is one of the nicest natured horses I have come across and she still did this to me!

Oooooh I hope you're not too sore, and you're right, that could have been so much worse!

I'm terrible for not even wearing my gloves when leading etc....must try and make more of an effort!

Not feeling too bad considering really. Lots of pain killers precribed by the hospital

I am shocking for wearing protective stuff other than for riding!

Will be much more careful in future though!

Back in the 70's when I was in the Pony Club we were taught to turn a horse towards the gate (to face you) when turning them out... this was to avoid such accidents.

I was taught this as well from when I first had horses and always stick by it

! She wasn't even in the field yet. I was leading her down to the gate, not really much I could do about it

My mare did a similar thing to a friend when she was recently truned out at a new yard after being at a yard where she was only getting an hour t/out some days for 7 months

She is also usually a dobbin too!

Needless to say i felt awful after hearing of my horses murder attempts and have since been the one risking my life. She has calmed down ALOT in the last few days and im gradually decreasing the armour used to turn her out, and i will soon be slack again and prob not wear a hat (i know its bad but lets admit it,most people are slack at this- who does actually put a hat on EVERY time!?!) but it does shock you into realising how much worse it could have been!

Confinement to a box can change them!
If we have had to box rest, our vet will prescribe some ACP f6r first turnout, stops them hurting themselves too.

Hope the bruises soon go!
