A load of boloney?

oh dear how funny!! my boy can often be found on 5 legs....would never dream of slapping it; firstly i would feel ridiculous and secondly I would be terrified of being spotted and branded a psycho!! there's nowt as queer than folk!

Mine does it now and again,I'm pleased as it means he's relaxed as we haven't had him long :) also tho sometimes he has moved it up to his belly and back down I don't know why he does that? Lol

Those of a nervous disposition should reach for the smelling salts now......

If he is slapping it up to his belly, he is, ahem, pleasuring himself!;):D

Sure she wasn't having you on?! What a crazy suggestion! Hope lady in question has a mare!

I doubt she was having her on. I've previously heard about people saying that if it is out, and if he's not urinating, you should slap it.

But I don't remember that they've said it was because the horse shouldn't be "exhibiting stallion behaviour", as I recall, their reason has been possibly even more gaga, saying things more along that the horse is indecent, obscene etc.

*sigh* I suspect that it is more a sign of that the person has a problem with it, being embarrassed etc., or (along the lines of what Emma_H said) that they've learnt it from someone who felt that way.

What an idiot, its hardly stallion behavior. I was told by some nutter once that an old arthritic horse would do better if it was kept overweight as the fat would keep it warm, & it wouldn't stiffen up. Rather than slim & adding warmth when required. Some people are just stupid.

On the other side , I used to be on the same yard as a woman who called the vet out because she had nt seen her horses willy for a while.
Bet the vets love clients like that!

I have seen quite a few handlers do it to stallions at 'showing' shows. I've always assumed its because they were getting too interested in the surrounding mares and they wanted to dampen their ardour so to speak :o

Absolutely barmy to do it to geldings !! mine lets it all hang out when relaxed or too hot ...

Christ I would like to see her try to get near my welshes bits and bobs without getting the double barrel! What a stupid women, my lad has his out all the time and not necessarily just dangling it either...naughty lad!

seen it done plenty to shown stallions, they are expected to behave with decorum not have a willy waving contest at shows;)

reminds me of the story of some horrible old bat who ran a yard who would throw buckets at horses who put their heads out over the stable doors, as she said it made the yard look untidy...

 SPEECHLESS!!!!

OP human males let it hang out at any given opportunity as well... it's just a man thing haha :D

Something someone said to me yesterday got me thinking.

My horse was stood by his stable quite relaxed with his willy hanging out and a woman told me to slap it! She said it was my horse exhibiting stallion behaviour and that I had to do it. I didn't slap it obviously as I thought it was complete rubbish.

Can anyone show me a veterinary thread or natural horsemanship which proves this is true!

It also made me feel so sorry for this womans poor husband, hope he never steps out of line!

Ahh, that's how she rolls then is it?

I've heard this before -from a close connection of a much in demand SJ trainer. Admittedly it was stallions, but she was nuts -and totally vile to her horses, as were her connections. She is a big part of the reason I'm so cynical of most pros - not the bits and bobs bashing (with a stick, for those who wish to copy) but just the overall conduct of the set up. A lot of people shouldn't have horses :(

This is interesting. My instructor smacked my boys winky with a whip when he dangled it before a lesson. I asked her what on earth she was doing and she said that dangling it was disrespectful and that he needed to respect her and concentrate. He was shocked (and so was I) and loaded incredibly quickly afterwards. At the time I assumed that she was right but it's not something I have ever done. Hubby saw and was horrified (muttered about it being no wonder she was single...).
If anything I take it as a complement that he is that relaxed and trusts us. It can be a bit disconcerting though, when I'm grooming and it suddenly appears and waves around with a mind of its own.

Mac flops it out whenever he's eating. Don't think he would like me disturbing dinner time, lol.

Gives me a good opportunity to have a little clean. Think he has the cleanest willy on the yard. (I let him finish his grub first)

Never heard anything so bloody stupid in my life! How does a horse know they are being disrespectful...what next..he isnt allowed to poop when he wsnts?

.

Just spat my wine all over the iPad! Also, although I agree with 'hubby' entirely, such a man comment!

It's not something I'd ever heard or thought of before, so was a bit bemused to see her smack him, especially as she justified it in such a matter of fact way. Since then, we've assumed it was something which 'professional' horsey people do and that we are a bit odd for happily allowing him to dangle whenever he likes and considering smacking it to be cruel.
In fact, I've just asked hubby and his words are 'I'd like to smack her ***** with a whip and see how she likes it...willy hating old ***' Now that image does have me worried...

How bizarre.

My lad is always getting it out, particularly when I've just taken a beautiful body shot of him
If I went and slapped it, I think I'd be seeing his frogs up close!

Some of the other stories on here are awful!

OMG some people are just nuts aren't they? Poor horses!

I'm another one who sees it as a sign of relaxation - I was quite chuffed when boyo got it out and allowed me to pick a few cornflakes off after only a couple of weeks :p

He now often hangs loose when I'm grooming him lol!

I've seen this happen in the inhand Arab showing world, and been horrified!! Talk about lack of empathy!!!

Luckyoldme, I had the vet look at my boy's bits as he had changed from getting it out at every opportunity to not seeing it at all. He had also become very dirty over a long period of time and I was worried there was something wrong. I did however get his annual jabs and teeth checked at the same time. Please don't knock people for being concerned about the welfare of their horse/pony.

Blimey, I wonder what some of these weird people would make of the gelding I was once asked to clean (can't understand why people are so leery about it TBH) which also had a bit of a reputation of being a bit jumpy and fidgety with his back feet. I clearly did a good job because for a while after that he would let it down if I simply walked past him. :) And as for the disrespect bit - bet she likes her men in chains and on their knees.
