We took both the boys to Golden Cross for BSJA today. OH got up and went to the yard at about 6:30am to grrom them and generally get them ready, while i got the kids ready and set out for the yard around 8:30am. I wanted to leave the yard by 9am to get to GC by 10:15am, but one thing and anbother conspired to mean we didn't leave until 9:30am. no matter, somehow we still managed to arrive by 10:15am...and they were still on the Clear Round, so time to chill and get ourselves together.
Trike was entered for the BN, and I decided to go for it with Bo and entered the 1.15m Open (a South of England Grade C Qualifer as well) and the 1.20m Open. It was going to be a long day as they were classes 1, 5 and 6
This was only the second time we had jumped on grass this year, and in fact for Trike, it was the first. It was also (to the best of my knowledge) the first time Trike had worn studs
The course for the BN was straightforward...in fact it looked tiny after the last track he had jumped....a 1.05m at Towerlands
He warmed up okay, but i was not finding it easy to get a forward stride on him which he needs. We went in for our round, and i was still struggling to ride him forward...it's so difficult to ride Bo and Trike on the same day as they are like chalk and cheese
We were clear to the second last fence, an upright of bright white poles and planks...which ahd caught a few out....and so it caught us too. I checked and checked going into it and there was no surprise when he stopped
Came again and he jumped it second time, and continued to jump the rest of the course clear. the frustration being that this class was won with the only clear round in the first round....if we hadn't had that refusal we would have finished in the top two
So, we waited, and waited....and waited some more...for the Disco, 1.05m open and then the Newcomers.....before the 1.15m started
Bo had warmed up well, and seemed happy. The course was big enough, but more to the point there were some very tricky distances and lines involed. We came to the first ( a big oxer on the right rein) and Bo gave it some serious air
This was great.....except for the fact that the second fence was on 3 short strides....and we were got in very deep as a result of the huge jump at number 1. Bo worked his magic though and somehow dug himself out of the mess
The we came to number 3, an upright on 3 short strides to a big oxer. Got an okay shot at the upright, but he just rolled it....very unlike Bo
He then jumped out over the oxer, and onto number 5, a double of uprights. Again, we had an okay shot at the first element, but still rolled a pole going in
The rest of the course he started to settle and we jumped clear for the remainder, but it was frustarting to have 8 faults ina round that felt pretty okay
The biggest frustartion of the day was that the 1.20m was cancelled as there were only 2 of us interested in jumping it
I'm gutted to be honest as i really thought we could have a good run around that track...but it wasn't to be
On a positive, this was the first 1.15m we'd been into from cold, and he didn't jump badly. I didn't ride it as well as i could have, but we must look forward. Next time out we will jump a 1.10m and 1.15m so hopefully the 1.10m will feel small
Argh.....horses
