Hopefully you've all forgotten the various problems suffered by poor Ron over the last 19 months...I wish I had!

Anyway, to cut a long dreary story short, he seems to have made some unexpected improvement. We went back to Cambridge in January, and the vets thought he was very slightly lame (1/10th) both hinds plus right fore. This is obviously a big improvement on the 4/10ths of previous visits. The physio was pleased with his back, which showed far fewer sore spots that before.

So, vets say carry on, don't worry about the slight lameness which shows more as stiffness, after all he's been through we're lucky he's not more lame.

So I've carried on riding him and he's been in ridden work for 5 months now. The lameness does seem to ease after he's warmed up. So...with much trepidation I booked our first lesson since July 2008. New instructor, and I was prepared for him to say "that horse is lame, I'm not teaching you". Anyway, all he said was that there was slight unevenness which looked like tension, but which evaporated with more work.

The lesson was AMAZING! Ronnie was just brilliant. We can't do small circles so we did lots of work on lateral flexion through his neck on large circles and straight lines, in walk, trot and canter, plus bringing him in to more of an "up" frame instead of the long & low/deep & round that I alternate him between. I honestly do not deserve such a brilliant horse. We might even be able to get out and do some dressage

Whilst it's probably only a matter of time before he breaks again, I am going to enjoy every minute of riding him. I never, ever expected he'd come back to this level of work - or be so happy with it. He just keeps offering more and more and there's none of the old pain responses. I keep getting all emotional about it - in a good way!

Thank you everyone for being so supportive, especially Bounty, CBAnglo, Brightsyde, NeddyNesbitt and others whose ID's I've forgotten but whose kind words I haven't. Fingers and toes crossed the good news isn't too short-lived...!

I do remember about your boy, and his various troubles. I seem to recall it all looked pretty desparate at one stage.

So pleased he's doing well now.

Long may it last!!

Ah that is such good news, long may it last. These boys certainly know how to tug at our heart strings don't they? We have exactly the same scenario with Rory so I understand exactly what you are going through. After nearly losing him to colitis in January, I was feeling very down but when the vet came to do another blood test, she casually mentioned that she wanted to trot him up out of interest. I know it sounds stupid but I just did not want anymore bad news, but to my total amazement he too is about 1/10ths lame behind (worse in walk than trot). He is really happy & still a hooligan

give Ronnie a big hug and well done for all your hard work and most of all enjoy yourselves

So glad to read this post! What a good boy R is! Are you using the same physio at CVS (KH) or are you back to your old physio?

Think the vets are probably right, the lameness is more of a stiffness and he just needs a bit longer to warm-up (I have to do about 20 mins in walk). Its probably the cold weather as well, he will probably be less stiff in summer with more turnout etc.

This is SO fantastic to read B, I am utterly thrilled for you. About time for a change of luck for you - you are so deserving after all the heartache you and Ron have been through.
I have been meaning to get in touch - I had my phone (and hence all my numbers!) stolen so have been intending to trawl back through my phone bills and decipher which number is yours!

Oh nightmare! I'll PM you my number. So much to catch up on!

It's just wonderful having him back, I'm so frightened of jinxing it by telling anyone, or by getting my hopes up, but since my lesson on Friday I've been on cloud 9 so I figured I may as well share a bit of happiness. He is such a wonderful horse and I am so lucky to have him.

Still using KH, but she doens't want to see him again (nor do the vets) unless something goes horribly wrong. The poor lad is doing carrot stretches constantly. He's even trained himself, and knows when to swap position (admittedly there was a confused stage in the middle when he was whipping round in all directions at the wrong time)! Maybe he's learnt to count?!

Yes he's much worse after time off/when being stuck in/first canter of the day. We do a good 10-min walk warm up, then trot then canter, then go back to actually starting work, plus I finish off with 5-10 mins of walk after doing some slow stretchy trot. It seems to be working

How are you and the boys? Sorry I've been so quiet, haven't wanted to jinx anything...

I understand this so well!
Can I admit that until yesterday Rage has been sharing Fee's bridle, I didn't dare replace his after the fire as I thought there was a high chance that he wouldn't be able to wear it

So I will find out shortly whether I have jinxed it by getting him his own bridle!

he is rather handsome

Thank you! I shan't tell him as his head is big enough already.

If I had £1 for everyone who said that, his vets fees would not be such a worry! Bless him he has blossomed in to a very handsome boy.
