I've just finished "In Defence of Dogs" (& the red Donaldson book who's name I've forgotten). It makes me so sad to realise the misunderstandings between dogs and people, and how "undoglike" we expect them to behave.

Have had dogs 40 years, but only recently becoming more educated about them!

It's not wrong - for stressy dogs, every time you leave the house, how are they to know you are ever going to come back!!

There are times when I consider not coming back when I wonder what the (much beloved :o) Devil Hound will have destroyed in my absence  It's normally something valuable, like part of a building or a vehicle, or when he was allowed indoors, the central heating controls and the solid wood flooring. I try desperately hard to think in "dog" but sometimes it's hard :D

I think you need to think about buying a crate RR :D
I can't leave the young dog alone without a bone or Kong for more than a few minutes, he has to have something in his mouth all the time, most notably my mother's Steiff from off her bed :o :o :o

Would have to be an ***ing big crate lol :D He does have a kennel and large run, but the idea was that he would have the run of the yard with the old lab (they have a radio fence) so that he can deter undesirables (by licking them to death after he has knocked them to the ground) and generally have a nice life by not being enclosed :D

The stoopid thing is that he's hardly ever alone, there's usually someone here all the time, but if I dare go out teaching or do the food shopping he pines, bless :p

For a "free" dog he has proved very expensive!

My lab goes to the inlaws during the day. FIL is house bound so she is great company for him.

When OH goes out and just me and the dog are left in the house, she disappears upstairs after about 20 minutes goes into the spare room and waits for him there. She can hear him coming up the drive from there long before he walks in the door. Clearly she is not too keen on my chat! I have known her sit up there for 3 to 4 hours patiently waiting.
