I moved my young horse to the yard I am on now as they breed, break and sell young horses for a living, alongside the riding school. So I hoped I would be able to get lots of help and lessons with mine.

They're just useless! They have 1 what I would call qualified instructor to teach, and so I pay £20 for a half hour of me trotting around doing what I do on my own, and her just watching me, to say at the end what I already know! Such as "He needs to slow down, he needs to use his backend more" - useless! No guidance, no suggestions how, what exercises might be best, just £20 for one sentance.

I don't know what to do, I could box away to somewhere else for occasional lessons, but I don't have a box, and I'm not from the area so I wouldn't even have a clue who to go to. I know there is a BSJA accredited coach round here, but that would be pointless as he isn't even jumping yet, and I'm investing in a VSD saddle for schooling.

AAAARGH.

Yep I know that feeling. I have a friend who is helping me now and 'gasp shock horror' she has no qualifications at all but I have learnt more from her in the last 12 months than I ever did with a bhs instructor.
So where are you ? Have a look in the local tack shop instructors will advertise their services. Try a few out and see how you get on with them.
Good luck I hope you find someone who can help you achieve what you want

They could just be bad at teaching, but it may be worth paying them to ride yours to see if that gets the results.

If they do all the breaking & preparing, they must know something but they may be terrible at explaining it.

I know how to drive a car, but I wouldn't have the first idea of where to start teaching someone.

I do agree with what digger says too. There are plenty of people with the skill to teach, just no pieces of papers or letters after their names.

Can you get in your own instructor to teach you at the yard? The BSJA accredited coach should be able to instruct at all levels, so don't rule it out, in order to achieve at a high level you've got to get the basics right in the first place. Where are you? Perhaps someone here can recommend someone.

Also when they're telling you "He needs to slow down, he needs to use his backend more" - ask them 'so how do I do that then?' or 'what do I need to do to make him do...?'

I'm in the north east.

Actually that is a good point, we aren't allowed to use our own instructors as we are supposed to use the centre's, but if the instructor could come after the centre has closed, so 5/6ish, then I'm sure it'd be fine.

Thanks, i just don't feel like we're getting anywhere. A young lass on the yard has just had a 4 yo imported, and so they have been away for 2 weeks having lessons. I don't have a box, and I don't even know where to go for a decent instructor round here! Very frustrating.

Dolly - the woman who breaks the young horses doesn't teach, it'd the 'head instructor' I have, who is supposed to be full of experience, but I just don't find her useful. She's very good when I have side saddle lessons on the school horses though, oddly. She can't ride as she had an accident.

Also, as chief instructor of a BHS riding school, she *should* be able to teach, I understand some people ride well but can't teach, but she *is* a riding instructor, for a very busy riding centre!

Dubsie - I suppose, I would just feel a bit daft getting a BSJA coach out to do a mainly flatwork lesson. I have asked the yard instructorhow, but she doesn't really respond. She said to put trotting poles out, but if he's racing along he will just fall over them, so I've mainly just developed my own schooling plan which has been working really well.

I phoned Philippa, she seemed really lovely

Shame, the ones i know who travel to the yard are from North of the Tyne!

Can you box to a lesson?

I have heard good things about Leamside Equestrian (a few miles from Houghton le Spring), they do dressage clinics with people like Tracey Woodhead.

Aye, but I don't have a horsebox, and am under 23 so can't self-drive a hire box.

If Philippa can teach in the late afternoon/early evening, then I can get her, as I don't know how arsey my yard are about bringing people in.
