so this is fox about a month into winter time, stabled most of the time, out all day depending on the weather (YO doesnt allow turnout if its raining).

i know hes lacking top line, me and his sharer tend to just potter about, dont do very much hard work with him! hes starting to get fluffy, CLIPPERS OUT!

so, how dyou think he looks :) ?

he looks a bit wonky cos he likes to follow me and wont stand for a photo!
and the stuff on his legs is just mud haha :o

He looks a very similar shape to my girlie... See my 'how are your tbs looking going into winter' thread.. I think he's looking ok but I personally would want more coverage seeing as we are just entering winter as he looks like he has little in reserved for the really harsh months! Lovely boy though.

Looks fine for a happy hacker outline , just dont let him loose any weight. I reckon a lot of peeps will reckon he is a bit lean but people are used to seeing fat horses nowadays even the nutritionists lol

Nice face x

id like to see him more covered too haha :( hes nightmare to put weight onto though! tried everything over the years! thanks :)

What's his diet/management like at the moment? :)

hes kept in at night, turned out during the day if its not raining. he gets a big haynet and a rack for over night and a hay net it put in by one of the other liveries in the morning if theyre not out.

for feed he gets a big scoop of molass free hifi, quarter scoop of fibre nuts, quarter to half a scoop of ready mash extra, 20ml linseed oil and a 30ml of mint :)

cos hes a windsucker vet said to keep him on mostly fibre, and it was kelly marks who suggested the linseed to me!

Sorry to burst your bubble, but winter doesn't actually begin until December!!!!!

I would like to see a little more weight on him too - have you tried pink powders?

Yes fibre is definitely the way to go! I had my tb on hard feed, weight gain mixes and cubes extra, tried ready mash extra aswell with no success.. She's now out 24/7 with ad lib hay, and has four small meals a day of sugar beet, alphabeet, hi fi and sunflower oil and has never looked better. I think the simpler the feed the more effective and the least amount starch possible is best. I would be tempted to have him out the stable more if possible on more turnout and ad lib hay ledge rather than hay if he's struggling.

id love to have him out all day every day if i could, but the YO is very strict when it comes to turnout, its a no go if its been raining the night before or in the morning. and its hayledge he's on, sorry thought i said that! totally agree about the simple feed thing, i hate when i see people pumping their horse full of crap and supplements they dont need!

Yep, we're still in Autumn! If he is only in light work and doesn't get too sweaty I'd consider leaving him unclipped with a mw rug, you don't want him burning too many calories keeping warm. He has a lovely face. :)

he gets so fluffy in winter though he just sweats up in the stable, even with no rug, for a tb he gets a very long thick coat!

That's a shame about turnout... I think really benefits horses especially tb that can be prone to stressing. We're lucky in that we have sole use of some land. I think it's a shame livery yards are so strict.. We have two horses out 24/7 and despite a lot of heavy rain there's only a bit of mud around the gate and around their hay, they haven't 'ruined the grass' at all.. I don't see the huge fuss over grass sometimes! (In that it doesn't get that bad and often recovers very quick, our grass isn't he best either)

i know its really frustrating as he's 100x happier when he's getting out, not to mention how much cleaner his bed is! i dont get the fussiness at my yard especially as we have a separate field for summer grazing..

Move yards? I would if he's not 100% happy.. I understand that not always realistic though

Like Sidney, I'd recommend NAF pink powder, especially as you're saying he has a sensitive stomach.

My old boy used to suffer from regular bouts of gassy colic, and he was also hard to keep weight on in the winter. Since he's been in the pink powder, not a sign of colic & he looks fab all year round :D

A quarter scoop of fibre nuts would be doing pretty much nothing. They are non heating so I would either up this to a whole scoop and change the Hifi to Alfa or reassess the diet completely to include a balancer and rice bran or linseed based addition. I think there is plenty of condition to add (especially coming into winter) but he is not poor.

If you have restricted grazing have you thought about using a grass chaff like readigrass or graze on?
I wouldnt go down the route of an alfalfa chaff if he's got a sensitive tummy. I have a tb x who looked like a hat rack following a winter in a pen with 4 other yearlings and i used this to bulk him up. Worked a treat coupled with sunflower oil!

I would replace the linseed oil with micronised linseed. Its not only cheaper but you get the benefits of none of the fibre being taken out. Its much better and you can feed quite a lot of it. You can get it from charnwood milling.
