is it possible to get a horse more confident when riding at the back of a ride. He is fine at front and middle but when he is at the back he stresses and if in canter pulls and frets to get to the lead horse. I am worried he may buck as well.

I would just let him lead? Unless you are out with others who have horses who also have to be at the front/middle and not one can go at the back then I personally find its not always worth forcing the issue or you may end up on the floor (from experience, the bucks can be quite big :p!). Some horses just dont like being at the back of a ride, same out hunting!

My lad occassionally goes at the back but the majority of the time if he's not at the front, he'd do his best to get to the front:rolleyes: I think that's how he's programmed! Some horses just like to be at the front!

one of my old mares was like this, she was very forward going tho so suited everyone for us to be at the front- would prefer this to a nappy horse who didnt want to lead!!

My veteran liked to be at the front or very near it. He used to get (now retired) quite fretful at the back. It's because a pack of African Wild Dogs, a hunting tiger, velocoraptor etc would take the rearmost horse first! Strangely, my new ned is happy (if allowed) to slop along at the back - she switches to the follow-the-bum-in-front trekking horse mode. She's 18 and still alive so maybe she's reasoned that velocoraptors etc are thin on the ground in Wales!
