Well i was walking my youngster out today (she 2yrs 3 months) and she was being a little boisterous, anyways got talking to an old man who told me what she needed was good old hardwork (rolls eyes) anyway after telling me what i should be doing with her he started to go on about posting her and get a bridle on !!anyhow i have never heard the term "posting" im guessing it has something to do with mouthing etc but i have never come across this term could someone enlighten me......and please be assured i have no intension of doing anything other than what im doing with my youngster at min lol

:)

I think (could very well be wrong here as memory isn't what it used to be) that posting is basically tying them up tight so they learn to stand up. usually to something that will not break and they exhast themselves trying to get free...

As for mouthing would it not be better to wait a little longer? Not broken anything in for many years now but didn't start with any of that until they were nearly four... As I say I could be wrong and very out of touch but...

My 2 year old (2years 1month) goes out for walks and he's bitted. In fairness nothing is attached to his bit as I lead him in a headcollar but it gets him used to having it in his mouth.
He's got a eggbutt snaffle that has a copper lozenge and seems to have taken to it quite well.
I have no idea what "posting" is?!!?

I lead my 2 year old out in a bridle and she had no problems with being bitted. If your youngster is safely under control in a headcollar then that is fine and you should ignore the old man! :D

As for the 'posting' mystery... well I know that in the US it means rising trot but maybe he thought that you should train advanced in-hand movements between 2 posts like they do with lipizzaners!?!!! :p

Faracat - What a horrible picture! Hate to see the head pulled in like that and must be really uncomfortable in its mouth. Makes you ashamed to be associated with riding doesn't it?

OP - you carry on ignoring the old (bad) school advice...

I've seen worse from people using side reins or draw reins incorrectly. To me that is an example of the highest training, higher than I could ever hope to come close to achieving.

OP - I intend to bit my youngster over the winter, just with a rubber mouthing bit. She will be 2 in the spring and I will show her bitted as a 2 year old.

I've heard the term posting before being a way to halter break a horse - basically you tie them to a post that they cant break and they learn to yield to pressure (i.e., pulling does nothing). Its a very gypsy way of doing things - our local WHW bloke has a few horses with our loca gyspies and thats the way they do it. He's happy with it, not the way I'd do it though....

My 1year old is already bitted! And wears her bridle for her shows (only 2 this summer though so its hardly alot). Found it simple as pie - put the bit in her mouth a few times, put the bridle on a few times (started with a synthetic bridle that was huge so there was no restriction), then put two and two together et voila.

Hi thanks for replies...i kinda just wondered what posting was....i nw we are all different in terms of age and timing for things....to be honest i have 3 horses and two are in work at min so in no rush to start my youngster she loads good with farrier ,vet, rugs boots and groundwork fine, shes fine being led etc so think ill worry bout bitting her next year when i have more time (hopefully ) lol

No idea what posting is, had a few different answers on here.

My two year old is bitted for in hand showing. Happy mouth loose ring.
