Or are they cleverer than we think?
How do horses know within less than 24 hours that the batteries in the electric fence have died?

I think they are more stupid than we think and so touch the electric fencing regularly...

Being serious, I think they actually learn to associate the 'click' sound you get when a fence is on with getting a shock, so equally they know when it is off because there is no 'click'.

We are on mains and mine NEVER test the fence - probably because we bought the model for wolves (one down from the elephant one).

Gives me heart palpitations if I get zapped....

my 3yo jumps into the paddocks and unclips the battery then the others wade in and destroy the fence without being zapped!!

My mare used to be in a Jurassic Park like mains powered leccy paddock. She would test it EVERY morning. Well, one very cold dark winter's morning she didn't bother to wait til I removed the head-collar. I got bungeed all across the paddock! I'm going with the stupid theory.

i think they learn about the click, 'cos when my son clicked his school pen they all jumped,

but i also go with the dumb bit too,

we have some normal mains & some solar powered fencing, still a good kick - it sent the dog flying when she got zapped,

but to a determined breton meer pain will not stop you getting out, even a 10,000 volt -sends owners arm dead for 2 min - blast won't work.
but the others, you could probably hold back the old trotter with a AA battery, she is super sensitive to it, she wont even go out the gap unless i go through 1st.
