As the big lad poo's loads and we pick it out by hand I have found the easiest way to do it is to kneel on the floor and muck out that way!! It's actually quite theraputic in a mundane kind of a way :) and so much easier on my back.

Does anyone else do this or am I mad?

Yes, me - I can't believe how much a 13'3" can produce! I don the marigolds, kneel down and off I go. I think I may start using one of those garden kneelers to keep my trousers/long coat a bit cleaner though!

Wear waterproof over trousers, absolute godsend as means I can go up in work clothes. Also if you put them over your wellies you can put them on and off with wellie boots - so much easier xx

Yes, I do this. My two are on easibed (easy is the syllable which is incorrect - it is anything but easy), so when I have got out the massive poos, I put on my pink marigolds and get down to business! x

We're using a similar product called Arden safe mix, so far I actually quite like it and it's cheap also which is good for the super wet one. Main reason why I like it is that the poo tends to stay on the top and bits that don't are easier to get xx

Haven't you heard of wood pellets!!! Did 9 beds this morning in 35 mins - without once having to get on my knees or don the marigolds!

ahahahahah......... I just asked OH (who does a lot of my mucking out!) whether he would condsider mucking out by hand!!! Wont repeat his response, he thinks you're all MAD!!!

haha i thought it was just me!!!
My back is lousy - im 44 had 4 children and its rubbish so i don the waterproofs and marigolds and get stuck in!
Its brill - every sunday my hubby does full muck out for me else id be in agony!

I agree.....what the !!!!!! Marigolds too?!!!!! I have 26+ racehorses to muck out everyday(Twice on Sundays)my boss would have me commited if I started crawling about on my knees picking the droppings up.
Just get hold of the muck fork and shovel the stuff up for gawds sake!
(44 your just a kid I'll be 61 next Jan);)

Try some Pilates! Get a Bowen treatment! If your horse's back hurt, would you expect it to keep on working without doing something to help? Fix the problem! Be good to yourself!

I've been going to Pilates for about ten weeks - my back is worse than before I went! All that sucking in of certain orifices and muscles just makes my back tense even more! Hate it hate it hate it!

Have you explained that to your trainer? He/she should be able to help you with it, that's what it's all about.

I didn't realise this was odd! I've got an industrial pair of rubber gloves (with fleecy lining) from the local agricultural shop. I pick up the droppings by hand and neaten and sweep the bed daily and then muck out fully about 3 times a week with a plastic snow shovel (I don't like shavings forks) - easy peasy!

I must admit I am tempted to give it a go with one of mine who is very tidy in his habits, there is no way it would be quicker with the other though as it is trodden all over the bed in little bits.......

I used to use the rubber gloves method but now have mine on wood pellets - which I am a recent convert to and can't praise them enough - and use an aubiose fork, pick up the droppings, give it a quick shake to get rid of excess bedding and drop into wheelbarrow, sweep and level bed. Can do 7 stables with one barrow and takes under 45 mins.

However, given my dogs love of eating horse poo I have considered just leaving them on the yard all day to muck the stables out themselves!

URGH!!!

Yep mats and pellets win here too - so quick, easy and cheap!:D

I was a wood pellet virgin till the other day! so i did and i soaked it in a weelbarrow with a small hole in! so i left the hose in for ten mins so they cud soak and the water could run away ( not sure if this is right ) I found the pellets wen i had soaked them, wen a lot like sand? Is this right?? But still.. I found it quite good, poo just sits on top? and wee? What wee? ive either got weel drained stables( only had matts a week ) Or the pellets are soaking it up!!
