I think I've found the perfect way of keeping the youngster from mugging me as I carry the haylage across the field. I used to have to wave and cluck at her to stop her snatching mouthfuls as I lugged it out to the middle of the field, but tonight I discovered an easier method.
I took a blow-tickler down just to see what they made of it and she was very suspicious of the papery, tooting proboscis I had suddenly sprouted. Not worried enough to run off, but she definitely wanted to observe from a distance for a while, which gave me a chance to heave the haylage out without being mugged.
I doubt it will last as a deterrent though, the old boy pretty immediately decided he didn't care what sort of noises I made as long as I continued to dispense haylage, so I'm sure she'll get over her suspicions pdq.
I dread to think what the neighbours think, although I'm sure it's not the oddest thing they've seen me do in the name of desensitiation!
