Last year I fed Fast Fibre, High Fibre nuts and chaff to my 10 yr old TB who is in very light work all winter along with as much hay as he could eat. He held his condition well until February when he seemed to really drop weight and looked quite poor. He picked up as soon as the grass came through but this year I would like to try and avoid the weight loss if possible. He is in at night, out every day and hacked out 2/3 times a week. The last thing I want is to turn him into a fruit loop but was thinking I might try Calm & Condition this year rather than the FF. Has anyone else used this on a TB or similar and how did your horses do on it. Advice or other suggestions welcome please.

Yes we started feeding this last year, we were on a course mix for keeping on weight but that sent our big horse loopy (she is bad enough over winter as it is) so I ended up putting them on calm and condition, it worked for thebig horse and my other who is a 14 yr old tb.

Didnt make any difference to the tb at all however she did keep weight on better than the previous winter where like yours it dropped off her at the end of winter. It was far better for the big horse too she calmed down somewhat but will never be easy to handle in winter. They both kept weight on without going 'wild'

i didnt really get on with it... i didnt see a real change in my horses weight, this was winter 07 so changed to kwikbeet around new year and saw a marked difference. i woulndnt go back to it tbh!

Used Calm & Conditioner since nearly 5 months ago when I first got my TB gelding. He was a little skinny and needed some feeding up. He's been having this mixed with Alfa-A and usually some apple!

Has done the job and he's staying on it, he's a good weight and not fizzy or hot!

My tbx or full tb ! has gained 40 kg on this feed,Ill see if I can find the link I posted some pics the other day as she has improved so much. She is very fizzy and nervous this feed and regular schooling have made huge difference.Other feeds sent her completely ott.

Cellie, thank you for those pics. She looks absolutely gorgeous. If Che came through the winter looking like that Id be very happy. Tbh, at the moment he could do with losing a little bit, but after last winter when he seemed OK til February and then just lost so much condition really quickly I can live with him being a little round at this time of year.

I can give you a link to the before pics she looked very thin with no neck. The yo put me on this feed she uses it on her horse who is hunter type she manages her grass so she doesnt get overweight and it works well for her as well.

If you have time that would be great. Would be interested to see whether her before pics resemble Che last winter. Last year was our first winter together and hopefully now I know him a bit better I can manage his weight and condition more successfully without sending him silly.

I've had Hoochy, a 16hh TB mare since 2004.

2005-2007 she was very poor through the winter and I struggled to keep her weight on. Since 2008 she's wintered on Calm and Condition and I think it's just fabulous...she keeps weight on a treat although she does get a bit sparky Jan/Feb time but that's probably more down to the fact I can only ride her twice a week at that time of the year.

I think its a great feed- a bag lasts her about 5 weeks. She has it with Badminton Easy Rider chaff and that's it.

http://s252.photobucket.com/albums/hh12/celebre1/?albumview=slideshow heres a link to all pics. You will see what she looked like last winter .I bought her september and she stressed out at old yard .She had no topline and was ribby which you can see .Shes just turned 7 , the combination of schooling being settled and regular work has made the difference.I think the c an c helped I couldnt have her on hard regular feed she was too highly strung but she needed something extra too add weight and condition.
Shes definitely looking more attractive lol thanks.Like you its end of first year together .Good luck with Che.Let me know how you find feed if you decide to use it .

Cellie, thank you for those. She did look very similar to Che in March, he went very ribby and the high points of his hips were quite visible. He is a horse who thrives on routine and a bit of a worrier, not highly strung if everything stays the same but he does get very stressy if things go wrong or upset his routine. I am hoping that after just over 12 months at the same yard he will be a lot more chilled this winter with the routine that we keep. He is also in a fairly settled work pattern, ie light schooling and hacking out, but it is regular and consistent and he is looking better this September than last, so fingers crossed. Based on those pics and others comments I will start the c & c once he starts coming in for the night and monitor his weight carefully. thanks to everyone for some very helpful input
