His training isn't too bad, its mainly when theres a distraction like another dog, he has to go say hello and THEN come back to me lol. But I've reintroduced the treats and have introduced a clicker today
Yeah, you will need one to one at his age and introduce the distractions gradually. If I want to train, and I only have two, it has to start individually, looks like he has good focus on you so that's a good start.
If he's milling around with the rest of yours and the ones you walk, and is allowed to and thinks it is acceptable, he isn't being constantly recalled from them, then he will not be able to differentiate between those dogs, who he is allowed to spend time with, with no restrictions, and other dogs, who he isn't allowed to go and see until you tell him - can you see why he might be confused?
I give him as much one to one as I can, mainly in the house, but I take him out on his own on a weekend.
He's now in the habit of coming dog walking with me, so I can't leave him at home, and another walk on top of that would prove too much for him.
But he is a super dog, and is proving that he can listen Its only every so often, and hey, as you said, he's only 10 months old, not perfect yet
Nobody said leave him at home, but you already have a ready-made distraction, start trying to get his attention now when he is in the group and be often recalling him from the group and rewarding him when he does this. Keep him on the line if you have to.
I am currently recalling my male from the distraction of other dogs, he is told to come and heel, and if he doesn't come after the first time of positive asking/inviting, I physically reel him in on the lead and put him in the heel myself, and then lots of praise when he is there in position. So he is realising it is easier to come and heel beside me and get pats and praise than to be pulled there and his end reward is the 'free' command so he can go back and do what it is that he wants to do.
No worries. But don't listen to me, I just had to sit down on my backside in the middle of the lane with my arms outstretched singing 'Bellabellabellabella!' after yet another tanking-off incident
I swear she only does it to make me look like a numpty.....
Hahaha, I know that feeling well!
But not with Paddy, he doesn't run off, its just when passing dogs normally.
Just been on the German Shepherd picture post, yours are gorgeous!
Ta Just keep working on the focus
Bella is just easily spooked, if she doesn't like something, gets scared or feels like she is being put under pressure - HOME!
Ohhh bless her
Big, Powerful german shepherd, that spooks easily. Lol
I have a collie that if you raise your voice at her, she'll run home. Dad did it one day and ended up ringing me to come catch her before she crossed main road.
She's actually unusually small and easy to handle, I think someone sold me a poodle with a GSD suit on or maybe a collie by the sounds of it. Quite handy though that she can put herself away, saves me a lot of bother....
