After having my mare two years and not having the chance to take her off the yard to do anything me and Cobrastyle finally took the plunge and went for a forest ride today.

My girl can be a bit of a nightmare, particularly hacking (although mainly when she is alone) and gets very het up in new situations. I have had some really disheartening hacks out on my own where she ends up so wound up she starts roaring like a dragon and frothing up all over!

She was a bit of a handful when we arrived at the forest - circling and about 60hands high when I was tacking up (or trying to!!), but shortly after we set off on our ride she relaxed and was a dream to ride - only a few very tiny weeny little spooks at squirrels. So all in all very pleased and have gained a lot of confidence in taking her new places. It has proven to me that she is just one of those horses who does prefer company out hacking and will just have to accept that - which is fine because I wouldn't ever swap her for the world!!

Looking forward now to going new places and trying new things step by step! :D

Not pointless at all!
A real cause to celebrate :-)

I have a mare who, when younger, was at times down right scary to ride.
We have to do most things on our own so every new outing was a bit of an experiment and every sucess meant so, so much.

So hope this is the start of many more fun, but calm, outings for you and your girlie.

You are so right - every new outing is pretty scary when you've got one that is on the higher end of the spooky scale, particularly when you are often on your own!

Feel like I want to go somewhere tomorrow now - but alas will have to wait for another month and another pay day!

Not pointless at all, my lad does his Girraffe impression coming off the trailer, has to have a good look round and can't wait to get started on fun rides, ears pricked and striding out, he hasn't spooked so far and we both enjoy seeing different places, so far we have recieved a rosette at the finish, a welcome bonus.
Prepare to enjoy your next one
