No I Don't cut Charlies because he had a very strange reaction when I did, he acted colicy and we had to get the vet out as a precaution

But I don't think it's cruel either.
 
I never take my horses whiskers off. And whilst I don't think it's cruel to do so - I do think it's entirely uncessary and can't be very pleasant for them.
 
I don't take them off but did when I showed at a higher level. I would prefer not to, but don't think its cruel.
 
I trim my mare's but dont cut them off completely. I only really started doing it because she used to have white stuff wrapped around them. I came to the conclusion that it must have been from the dew and spiders webs on the grass overnight. It was kinder to cut them short rather than pull the web off. At least thats what I thought it was. Some people said she must have singed her whiskers on the electric fencing but I know she wouldnt have got close enough to do that!

ehhhhh :S my hoss just stands there and loves having his face trimmed? He falls asleep lol
and hes never had a prob with electric fences .. weird, i've never thought it a problem till now

ETA: I wouldn't cut my cat's whiskers off so why would I want to cut my horse's whiskers off?
 
Yes I do trim them when they get long and no I don't think it's cruel.

She behaves in the same way, with or without them so doesn't seem to bother her either way

i voted yes i cut them and no its not cruel.....
however when i say cut i mean trim so all fliss's are about 1 inch long as if they are longer they look tatty but they do have a purpose so thats why i dont remove then totally

I don't trim lucys whiskers or maybe i should say i can't. She's always been funny about her nose being touched and i can't get the clippers anywhere near her nose. I show Lucy and am doing vetran qualifiers for olympia. I will not trim her whiskers just because people say it's smarter. some people say Lucys not carrying enough waight to show but if i put any more on she'll get laminitas and that would be crule. I think we have to do what we believe is best for our horses. I don't trim because i beleive horses need their whiskers but i don't think it's crule to cut them off. modern horse management means the horse has all he needs put under his nose and he doesn't have to seek what he needs.
 
mine gets a full shave the night before a show. Never objects. No problems with electric fences etc.

As previously stated it smartens them up and is expected at a high level of showing.

I don't bother at other times though.
 
I believe it's illegal in Germany to cut off a horses whiskers for competition, as they recognise the horses need for them.

I think there are also some scentific studies being carried out about horses who sustain head/ facial injuries during travel with regard to whiskers/ shaved muzzle.

Based on this I trim my horses jaw area etc but leave their whiskers as nature intended..... and we've had plenty of good results at county shows etc.

I don't trim whiskers as I have no reason to do so but I don't think it's cruel...unecessary for some horses but not cruel.

For the 31 people that answer yes (yet don't seem to have posted why) the definition of cruel is:

adjective (crueller, cruellest or crueler, cruelest) 1 disregarding or taking pleasure in the pain or suffering of others. 2 causing pain or suffering.

Pain and suffering? Seriously they are whiskers not testicles....oh wait they cut them off too don't they!
 
With Arabs im sure your not allowed to cut the whiskers, years and years ago my dads mate took his stallion to paris show, seen other horses with trimmed whiskers, so quickly shaved his stallions off, he was refused entry into the class as your not allowed under UK rules (the other horses were from different countries where it was allowed)
