Hi

I'd like to pick the collective H&H brains.

Currently I own a 4X4 and an i10.

I'm seriously considering getting rid of the 4X4, I just don't use it much anymore (haven't towed or feel inclined to tow for over 12mths). The only reservation I have is that the lane to the farm where my orse is is a little rough and we sometimes get hit with snow in the winter.

I've been thinking of getting rid of both vehicles and just having one that does all the jobs I need.

So, what (if anything) is out there that ticks all or most of the following?:

- low road tax
- reasonable insurance
- good mpg
- reliable
- able to cope with occasional challenging terrain
- fits tack
- fits medium size dog

Any recommendations?
 
I have a smallholding and have a Mercedes A Class 1.9 diesel

Its very reliable and I get around 50+ mpg on my 120 mile a day motorway commute, its done 26,000 miles in the last year without missing a beat

The back seats come clean out so the back becomes effectively a van if necessary, the boot aperture is very square and goes all the way to the edges of the car so the space is very generous (even if you only have the seats down and not out) I can get 4 bales of shavings in with room to spare and have had six full size pallets stacked in there too!

the ground clearance isnt bad and even with 14 bags of feed in the back it drives over my field no problems

Its good in the wet and not bad in the snow and it drives very nicely, is comfortable and has enough ooomph to overtake

The drawback is that the boot is very small with all the seats up. The road tax is expensive for mine but its a W reg and the models from 2001 onwards are much cheaper

When I was looking for a car I wanted an Astra 1.7 estate but I happened across the A class by chance and was so pleased that I did!
