My beautiful dog was run over and killed three months ago, and to this day my life feels empty. However today I feel like i have turned a corner, I visited her grave at the bottom of my garden for the first time since she died and finally feel ready to post about her on here and share what a wonderful dog she really was with everyone.
Her name is Iowa, she is an American Eskimo and I owned her from a 10 week old puppy. She was nearly three when she died and the most loving, loyal beautiful dog i have ever had the pleasure of owning.
Here she is, from puppy to adult:

...I have now decided to start looking for another dog. Although nothing will replace Iowa, i think its time.
I just wanted to share what a beatiful creature she really was, and let her know that not a day goes by where i dont think of her.

She was lovely - there is a permanent, stickied thread up at the top of this forum ^^^^ if you want to record this as a permanent tribute.

I've never heard of an American Eskimo, but she was beautiful. Interestingly, I do have an old collection of cigarette cards of dog breeds and there is an 'Eskimaux Dog' beside the 'Alsatian Wolf Dog' - I am so glad they are not called that anymore!

Good luck on your search for a new pet x

Thanks, I think i will put it up there. She was a beauty, and i miss her everyday. Not sure what happened today, but things finally are starting to feel a little more 'normal'
I have no idea what breed of dog i am looking for, i think the right mut will just jump out at me, am off to the RSPCA tomorrow to have a looksie

Hi FrankieBoy,

What a tragic loss. We had a lovely rescue dog, ran over in dark outside our gate, quiet country lane, late at night, by someone who didn't stop. She was 3 also. It's just horrible, isn't it? Totally understand how you feel x

Then we lost a much loved old rescue dog recently, heart gave out, bless.

Iowa was absolutely gorgeous, a really beautiful lady, + a great friend to you. I only wish she could come back, as I wish mine could, also. It's nice that she's buried in your garden, just as ours are, where they're at home + at peace.

Like you, friend, i rescue a dog in kind memory of a much-loved dog i've lost, so it's lovely that you're going to RSPCA tomorrow. (There are other dog rescue places also, just Google, + maybe contact dog warden for your area)

There's a thing on DogLost website, where there's poem ('Heaven's Gate'?) about dogs who've left us, they're in doggy heaven, then we die, + suddenly they see us, rush to us + greet us. Bawled my eyes out - l'Oreal will make a fortune with runproof mascara now!!

It's brave to be a true animal lover, as our dogs + horses have a shorter life-span than us, but let's always remember the enrichment they bring to our lives, the friendship, loyalty, fun. The less brave say 'never again', while most of us know that life must go on, + i like to think that the best of us pay tribute to a lost pal by rescuing another pal, just as you plan to do, FrankieBoy.

With all my best wishes, love BS x

Thank you so much for all your kind thoughts. I'm off to the RSPCA this afternoon, and have searched for a few more rescue centres online. Im not rushing into anything, however it certainly feels like the right time.
BrandySnap, that poem sounds beautiful, but I'm not sure I'm brave enough to read it just yet...
xx

I got Henry about three months after losing Barney too, it was just the right time for me. So sorry to hear about your loss

I went looking for a greyhound or lurcher and came home with a spangle, so who knows what you may end up with? Let us know how you get on!

ETA

I can't even think about that poem without bawling!
