Everything was normal the Friday night ,Well got up yes morning sat ( apart from my mare chronic laminitis and lame.)

gave her am hay 3 lbs of it she started to eat it chewed around a bit sucked on it then spat it out. She proceeded to do this with more hay throughout the day , hardly ate any hay quidding allot. By Pm was worried spoke to Equine dentist who so kindly came out checked her ( she was last done Dec 2010. ) he found nothing wrong. The only thing he mentioned was she was stiff in her jaw and he couldn't move it from side to side very much. I then phone vet who came out also said same thing and said Mandible joint was painful as My mare was fidgety when vet touched it ( as mare did with dentist) .

Mare wears the guardian mask in stable.

Now the only thing i thought of was

a. she banged her head on the bars/ slip rail in her stable. although vet said no as there would be swelling.
b. tetanus vet said no
c.something sinister.

well vet said up her bute over the weekend.

i did added 1/2 sachet to her 1 bute in am and pm feed till tonight.

Tonight she has eaten all the hay and no longer quidding, I was so worried last night I didn't enjoy my friends 40th party.

any 1 else found something like this, quidding horse for no reason???
I ask the vet if stung she said no.

I am really baffled , but pleased she is eating a bit now .

My 34 yo does that with some of her hay .. I find sausages of hay in amongst the dropped hay on the floor under her net . She eats her feed no problem , never a scrap left and bucket licked clean . She is seen every 9months by the dentist and he said she has a good mouth and teeth for her age and she is carrying good weight . Ive never seen her spitting these sausages out and no one seems to know why .
But she eats the rest of her net no problem.

My horse started quidding almost overnight about three years ago. I rang the EDT as soon as I noticed it was becoming a problem and he came out the next day (there's service for you!).

He said the horse had developed sores on the inside of his mouth due to sharp molars and although this can happen over many weeks, it only becomes intolerable in a matter of days, I suppose like if we have a bad tooth in that we will cope with the pain for so long and then all of a sudden it becomes too much for us to bear and we put off the inevitable and go to the dentist.

This is why in my horse's case he suddenly started quidding.
