Ok, so I'm no jumper (or cardigan!!! lol couldn't resist) Josie and I enjoy the occasional 'pop' when we're in the mood. Most people on our yard are the same. However, one girl has moved her 2 horses down recently. She loves her jumping and goes out competing regularly at least a couple of times a week. My question is, how many times a week would you be jumping the horses at home?

Since she has moved to our yard, she has jumped them everyday, even the day after competing. Now this strikes me as a little OTT and would never dream of doing this to J, although she's get bored and play up anyway I'm sure!! lol

Just after your opinions xx

At this time of year only once or twice a week if even cause they're all just coming back in off grass. At the height of the sj season, shows twice a week and school at home once a week and with the more experienced ones they sometimes won't even need a jump between shows if they're going well. everyday i think is not good cause they get bored.

I would agree even if its working the horses are being over jumped... And likey to sour..... I tend to with my youngsters jump once on lunge/looseschool and once riden a week. Although if coming up to a comp and there are exercises I need to do, I will. Also if I need to do contin a lesson I will do it within three days, because any longer would be to long.

Varys with every horse, Carling loves his jumping but try and jump him 2 days in a row, and he gets bored and lacks his spirit on the second day which is why I normally jump him once a week, including shows. I will occasionally jump twice in a week if I've been to a show and know there is something I need to work on before the next show.

TBH it all depends on the horse, i had a pony and if i jumped her more than 3 times a week including at shows she would start stopping and just didn't care, whereas if i just jumped her say the day before i went to a show she was amazing and loved every minute of it, and the horse that i have at the minute i could jump him everyday and he would just get on with life as he enjoys most things and it won't put him of at all in fact its better for his confidence the more i jump him

Once a week max but then he knows his job and isn't spooky so we jump to keep my eye in and my confidence up...but obviously depends on stage of training of horse and his natural talent/enthusiasm

I jump pretty much every time I am in the school (only at weekend at mo cos of the dark, but over xmas about 4 out of 7 days)

I usually do a couple of jumps and leave it. Occasionally I wizz round the course. I do little and often...

Saing that when I had my JA my dad would not let me jump him at home, and if I did it was an oxer and then left.

Horses for courses really!

During show season I tend to do one full schooling a week. By that I mean a course of jumps. On top of that I will do 1 or 2 days of an exersice...usually not more than 2 or 3 jumps in a row. They aren't big, it is more the idea behind it that you are training on. Besides that they get 1 or 2 days day off and 1 light hack after the big jumping day. On the light schooling days there is usually a good hack involved, sometimes that is the exercise for the day. A show day would count as a big jump day.

During the off season I take a couple of months with no jumping to work on flat. However it is important to leg them up for jumping. A horse can be fit on the flat but that doesnt mean they are jumping fit. Jumping uses their muscles differently and at a high pace, you need to train for that. Think if a person training only on running but wanting to compete on hurdles...you need to practice the jump.

If that girl is only popping over a little fence everytime and only doing it once or twice I wouldnt think anything of it. However if she is jumping hard everytime she is going to wear that horse down before the season is over.

It depends on the horse, but i wud always try and jump each horse 2 to 3 times a week including competition, as you need to jump at home to practice what you are going to do in competition, otherwise you cannot improve.
Although varying exercises are a good thing to do and you dont always need to jump big when schooling.

If shes varying exercises and her horses arent bored then its ok but jumping evryday is a bit OTT!
