I posted this on my doggie forum but no-one is online to answer! So....

Can I leave ickle Flickle (yes, she has a stupid nickname already ) in her crate with a bone? She howls when she is first shut in there

(last night and when I went to the livery yard this afternoon) so I thought it might distract her and stop her annoying the neighbours

I have bought two calcium bones for her - obviously I would never leave the two of them together with bones or toys though

I gave my two (well and Layla pinched them too) big old marrow bones from the butcher the other day. He tenderly chopped and filed them so they were just right bless his heart. Anyway, they didn't smell, didn't splinter and were perfect for keeping them all quiet, they didn't even get wind!

And I dare you to try to say her nickname late on New Year's Eve

Well, I'm obviously not the right one to ask

, because I'm an irresponsible owner who never thought about not leaving my dogs together with bones, I only remove squeaky toys.

Or maybe you only mean leaving them together + bones now when they are new acquaintances?

However, as long as it's a sort of bone not likely to choke her, I'd say do it. Accidents can always happen, and I think it's better my dogs are happy and only 99 % safe, rather than unhappy and 101 % safe.

Probably shouldn't mention this, but whenever I leave my pets all alone, I'm worried that either the house will burn down or a burglar will come and leave the door open and all cats and dogs runs away.

I am shocking with names, I keep calling Flick 'Islay'..... and Islay gets called 'Ellen' as that was the last black greyhound I had.... a sign of old age for me I fear

TBH as Flick is a food obssessed type I dont think I would ever leave her and Islay with bones unsupervised - my two whippets fighting one time was bad enough, I would hate to see a greyhound fight

But thanks for the feedback, I shall try her tonight with a bone and pray for peace and quiet

BTW I always worry about the house burning down when I am not there, and the dogs not being able to get out.....

Although a friend of my mum's had a dreadful thing where there was very very sudden flash flooding, and three of her Cavaliers drowned

So although my mum lives on the top of a hill, she is always convinced that the house will flood when she is away

Sorry you've had dogs who fought once, and you're right, the risk must be bigger when Flick is obsessed with food. The thing is, my dogs doesn't chew much on dog bones when I'm not around, so I've always presumed the risk for them starting to fight over one when they're busy waiting for/missing me, wouldn't be very big, especially when they've always had plenty to choose between.

We had a small fire one night/early morning in our old house, and one of our neighbours came over to hear if we wanted come over to their house (with my 3 dogs, 4 cats and 1 Budgerigar). Later in the morning when it had turned out that only two, three rooms where damaged, two of the fire-fighters told us how impressed they were about our neighbour.
And then told us about somebody who lived in an apartment with her 2 dogs and 3 cats (or maybe it was 3 dogs and 2 cats?). When she was out one day, an electrical fault started a fire, and the neighbours didn't call 112 until it was starting to threaten their apartments, though she had a smoke detector. When the fire-fighters came all her pets was already dead.

Anyway, "our" fire is what makes me worry about leaving my pets home alone.
