I have a horse which when I took on was told had OCD in the stifles. he is 9 years old. I have absolutely no idea whether he has had surgery or injections to the stifle previously. Where I got him from I was told their vet report stated he had a stifle effusion and mild bilteral lameness, which was treated with paddock rest before bringing back into work.

He has always been sound with me and is in regular work consisting of schooling and hacking. He only occasionally gets a locked stifle but only occurs if he has been standing for periods of time ie overnight. never to this day has he has any swelling.

All of the information on OCD I have found they talk about treatment by arthroscopy or injecting the joint. But wondered if there are many cases which have not had this treatment and do not appear to be in discomfort?

My 10 month old colt was diagnosed with OCD last May in his hock, he had box rest for 6 weeks then paddock rest until August and was then re x rayed... They did the arthroscopy operation in August, the specialist told me that they leave youngsters for a while before they do the procedure as some youngsters repair themselves given time... My boy, touch wood has never been lame and im hoping the operation has been a success.....

Hope this helps a little.....

my 9yr old had bilateral arthroscopy due to OCD in his stifles last April. Up until then he was never lame but he was working very hard as a hunter so I expect that brought on signs of lameness.

My horse had OCD in his back fetlocks as a foal, but after 3 months box rest the chips had reattached, and a follow up xray the year later showed that they had healed well.

He's rising 4 now, so not in work yet, so I don't know if he'll stay sound or not. Or whether he had it in other joints or not. The vets couldn't find any signs of it, but I do think he's a bit stiff in the back end sometimes.
