A question about TB's..

I wondered if TB's from different countries are different types to british ones? A lot of people say that the best eventers are NZ or AUS TB's, and other people rate Irish TB's.... isnt a thoroughbred a thoroughbred, no matter where it comes from? Just curious!
 
We've had Tbs from all over the world, currently have an australian, an american and an irish. The type of tb they breed varies slightly, the Oz horse is big and rangy but with an unbelievable sense of quality about him. The american just looks american- he's short and stocky. The irish has an almost hunter air about him, he's built to last and could perform in any sphere.
 
Given that all TBs are bred to race and are not allowed to be entered into the stud book unless they or their progeny have, then all TBs must basically be the same. Differences could only come about where an individual country had a radically different racing distances / types. Given that top racehorses travel around the world to race, it would seem that there cannot be any really big differences as that woudl lead to horses being unable to compete ion equal terms.

I guess we could also assume that most TBs are going to be bred with the idea of winning the big money flat races so, again, they should all end up pretty much the same given the same evaluation criteria. I suspect that the different 'types' exist within each country and are really little more than a slight difference in bone and character.

The fact that a racehorse has to actually perform is probably what has made it such a great breed. Wherever it now comes from, they all go back to the same English horses.
 
Hi Bossanova.. many thanks, it was just confirming what i was thinking but i wasnt sure.. when i was in Australia i was given a big TB to ride, he had only been off the track for 6 months, after being a successful racehorse.. he's been the best TB i have ever ridden, i'd love to have bought him home but didnt have the money..broke my heart.. i'm hoping to find one in the UK at some point.. or just keep saving until i have enough to import! he is a pic of him.

Tricky question because a lot of racehorse stallions are used in lots of countries- I.E. they spend one year in OZ, then another year in NZ, then the UK then maybe to the USA so I dont think that you can really generalise on type at all. Also all of them share such similar bloodlines anyway and sold abroad/imported so there is no true type in each country really...

Actually, that's not true any more. I registered a mare with Wetherby's non-TB register, and if I had bred her to a TB, then her progeny would've been eligible to race (although no doubt they would've been crap)
I've seen VERY disimilar TBs.

Well, I believe all racehorses decend from 200 English mares and 3 foreign stallions; The Godolphin Arabian, the Darley Arabian and the Byerly Turk.

I agree that the TB is a great, great breed though

He is quite the most pleasant horse we've ever had in! He's called Easy, came out of racing in mid Jan (this was taken last week) and is an absolute darling! He's sold subject to vet though

I hope he passes and goes on to give someone some real fun. Ive yet to meet a bad Irish TB. Ive got an elderly Irish chap called Wesly-he did some serious showjumping in his day and represented belgium in a couple of Nations Cup. He 34 this year, has legs like a two year old and a real sense of humour. His motto is "out for the crack" (dont know how to spell it in Gaelic
