My daughters pony is going to the vets on Tuesday and I imagine they will want to xray his foot, will they HAVE TO take the shoe off or can they do it with it on?

The reason I ask is because he has gel pads and they were only done 10 days ago so if they do I'll have to get the farrier back out to do it again.

I'm unsure whether it will affect the image if the shoe is still on?

Almost certainally they will have to remove the shoe. You can ask for them not to - and they can try to x-ray with shoes on - but the clenches and the shoe itself get in the way of what you are looking at - so you wont nececcarily get such a good job, and with x-rays its imperative that you get as good a picture as possible or theres little point.

hope you get the results you are hoping for from the x-rays xx

My big mare had shoes left on for her X-rays, but they did warn me we might have to have shoes off if they couldn't see all they needed to. Luckily we found what we were looking for (above shoe level!).

(Edited to Add: my clinic had a farrier on site then, so they would have removed the shoe and reshod her on the day if need be)

Hi, mine had his shoes removed by the vet before they x rayed. He wouldn't xray with them on.

I thought someone might say this!

Thank you, and yes I think your probably right, I would rather pay of the gel pads again than for a 2nd lot of xrays cos the first were inconclusive.

I'm assuming they will be looking at the pedal bone, this is obviously above shoe level but the clenches could hide something I guess

mine recently had both front feet x rayed and vets said they'd most likely have to take his shoes off but in the end they didnt. pics were taken with shoes on.

Can I just ask how much it costs to x-ray one foot?

My vet charges about £15 a shot for x-rays plus call out for the x-ray machine unless you go to the clinic, setup charge, consultation and so on. When my pony had 3 joints x-rayed in the clinic plus a full lameness work up with nerve blocks in both hind legs for complex biliateral lameness it was nearly £500.
It was less than £150 for a diagnosis of laminitis at the yard (shared call out but I was the only one using the x-ray machine) which included nerve blocks and x-rays and some bute and acp. She did it as cheaply as she could because she knew I wasn't insured for it. We skipped things like having the pony sedated because she is quite well behaved and trusted not to stand on the expensive new x-ray machine to save money on sedation.

Thank you for all your replies - they left the shoes on to xray, but as the xray shown damage to the pedal bone on one foot so he took the shoe off to investigate further.

Turns out that it is a deep rooted abscess that has eroded some of the pedal bone. Any one had any experience of this?
