Has it turned him into a ‘humpy’, sex obsessed maniac? 😂

I’ve been approached by a couple of people about the possibility of using my (pedigree, fully health tested, working) dog on their (also pedigree, fully health tested, working) bitch.

My boy is 3yrs old and has never shown any inclination towards being a sex pest. He’s never even humped toys or his bed.

I have a friend who allowed his dog to be used at stud around the same age and said it turned him into a monster. Is this just a case of training and correcting if he shows unwanted behaviours? He’s clever, trainable and eager to please.

Or is the best way to avoid this, to insist on side by side AI rather than natural cover?

Any suggestions and experiences very much welcomed, I’m totally new to this!

You've met 2 of my stud dogs. Neither is a sex pest.

There is very very clear rules. We only do matings in the kennels on "the magic carpet" aka a non slip mat. No where else. The mat is the indicator for the job in hand.

Do they whinge and howl when a bitch is hot to trot? Yes. Do they ignore her for the other 19 days of her season? Also yes.

Bitching, chattering, humping and general arsehole behaviour isn't accepted. Firm no, gentle redirection to something else.

Also side by side won't change things - he is still getting the hormonal/serotonin reward in the presence of an in season bitch. We also let them jump the bitch to collect them in most cases so in his mind his job involved her still.

Ah ok, makes a lot of sense. No real benefit to side by side in that regard then. That’s really helpful.

Your boys are lovely, I did think the poor behaviour of my friends dog would’ve likely been due to poor/non existent boundaries- he’s not the most consistent 😂

He’s a good lad that takes correction/redirection well, I don’t think it would take much to install the rules with him. It’s also not something he’ll be doing a lot of. Maybe only once or twice in his life as there are so few about!

Myrka has about 50 collections/matings and is the least pest like one I have!

We had a stud dog who was used quite a bit and he was never an issue . He only bothered when a female was at their height , ignored them in the early days . I think sometimes if a dog only has one stud it can leave them a bit more obsessed but not always .

Thankyou, mine is a very rare breed so won’t ever be in much demand so I’ll have to make sure I’m on top of any unwanted behaviour if he does end up being used!

We've got a little working cocker who's been used quite a lot and he's the most mannerly around the girls. He knows when the time is optimal and doesn't bother the rest. The homebred cocker boy who's been used once is the most annoying with his enthusiasm, but then he's annoyingly enthusiastic about most aspects of his life most of the time!

Hes not changed at all. I thought he might be more interested in girls generally but nope. Zero interest and hes exactly the same.

Edited to add, hes only been used once but will probably do a couple more this year, depending who wants to use him and if I like them or not. If I dont then he wont. I'm very precious about him!

As a bitch owner who had to travel her spayed bitch with three stud dogs on the game cart today (to the first drive anyway, after that I insisted she travelled in the cab)… he may well be a bloody nuisance!
(Apparently it’s my fault because she’s spayed). 🙄

Our working cocker has had quite a few bitches, he is quite seasoned to it now. We do get howling for a few days if our only entire bitch (being spayed next month) has been in season. With visiting bitches he is very sweet, invites them to play, chats them up with a few bows then slips around the back. Once it’s done he’d like a pee please and to go back to his kennel. He is no bother to out of season bitches.

Of ffs 🙄 I’ve met a few like that and absolutely don’t want to end up with one! Both of our bitches are spayed so he’ll have to keep his manners around his sisters!

That very much sounds like an owner problem 🤞🏻 (I’m hoping!)

We used our dog 4 times, 3 with our own bitch, and one visiting, (oh yes and one unplanned with neighbours border terrier 🙄)

He wasn't a pest but we live in a quiet area and he never got to meet many other dogs. He did get arsey with his sons tho, but that might have happened anyway

Both my old males were used at stud, neither became humpy. If they had, they've had been told to knock it off. One did try humping my mother's poor old castrated rescue dog *once* but he got told off pretty sharpish.
I find male owners/handlers slightly less diligent in curbing the behaviour, I wonder why....

My boy Toast is similar to above, he's only interested in a bitch if she's hot. I can have him in the house with an in season bitch, separated by a stairgate if I'm around, he doesn't even try to jump it (although can jump a 5 bar gate when working). We have a designated mating zone, I use an empty rubber matted stable, dogs are not normally allowed on the yard.
