I have two horses and six months ago bought a lorry so i can take them both to competitions together. (one of them would only travel in trailer without partition, so not feasible before!)
They both are very happy in the lorry and happy to be left on there when at shows. I have so far only needed to take them both together once, but will be doing more so in the winter.. When i leave one on the lorry whilst competing the other, the one left on screams his head off and strikes out with front legs having a tantrum! They both do this and i just wondered if there are any helpful tips for shutting them up and making them stand still. They live in separate paddocks at home and you can quite easily leave one whilst hacking the other. I always leave the one on the lorry with plenty of haylage.

Is it just something they will eventually get used to?

Try a stable mirror, I know I keep saying it but for the £15-20 you'll pay for a small one well worth a try. We brought my newbie home yesterday and I think it really helped him, when we stopped for fuel he was busy watching himself!

Stilton,

I have a similar problem with mine and a friends as we tend to do stuff together but don't always do the same classes.

We found they have become a lot better over time. They shout a lot to start with when separated but one of us goes back to lorry to check every so often and they do seem to settle. Do you have a spare pair of hands who could do this for you or are you travelling on your own? Just having someone who could check would be peace of mind for you.

Think they will get used to it.

Thanks arwenplusone. I would always have someone with me if i take two so i was thinking of leaving said person in the living with a cup of tea as company for the one left on board. Its nice to hear they may get better the more i do it.

I have the same problem and at the last show I had to take one ,leave daughter with that one and go back for the other and not let them see each other until the end.It was nearly an hour each way. They are both qualifed for the RC champs and I don't know what to do as one is in dressage and if he neighs he will lose marks

I just shut the outside doors (not the ramp, the white doors) and leave them to it! Our youngster today kicked when the other two were taken off then settled and behaved impeccably.. I just ignored him!(although obv. judged by the noise to ensure that he wasn injuring himself!)

Both my boys work well when they are off the lorry, they dont worry about the other one left behind and when you put one back on the lorry they usually have a go at each other! SO it is tantrum more than anything.

they usually get used to it. having a helper who can stay with the horse in the lorry for company, at least for a while, really helps. don't trust them not to do something daft if they get really wound up... i saw a horse left on its own kick for ages, then jump the bar in front of it and land half in the luton of the lorry, once...
