hi :)
this is my 10yr old gelding , his dam was steel grey (quite dark) and his sire was apparently colored (chestnut & white) although i have my reasons to doubt the stallion so am not 100% sure what the sire was like

he was born bright bay and white and went very dark at about 4 months , i thought then he might grey out but he seemed to stay that color although developed some frosting on the top of his quarters and shadowing around the lines where the black meets white that he didn't have before

he's now 10 and i'm sure he has developed more "frosting" since his summer coat has come in this year
is it possible for him to be going grey at his age ? i thought he was staying this color but now i'm not so sure

this is him

I am pretty sure that he will be staying that colour :)

His 'frosting' looks as if (and I am sure Faracat will be on here to tell you properly) it is just a bit of roaning going on, he has sabino (raggedy edges and roaning on his withers) I have a black and white pony who looks solid in the winter, but when his summer coat comes through he gets roany patches too.

He looks like a Seal Brown Tobiano with Sabino. As Enfys said, Sabino is the likely cause of his roany patches/flecks. He doesn't look like he has grey at all.

Interestingly - I've seen a few Steel greys for sale recently that were actually black sabinos.

Greys will often grey out around the eyes early on in the greying process. They will get more grey/white as the years pass. Some get fleabites.

Sabinos can vary tremendously, from having a small jagged edged sock or star, to flecks/roaning in their coats, white/grey tails/gulastra plume, to being completely white. They don't change colour to the same extent as greys (just small changes, often there are less flecks in the winter coat and more can be seen in the summer coat).

True Roans have dark/non roaned heads and legs (ignoring any white face/leg markings).
