A question for Sharers...£££ Sorry Rant...

I've been lucky to always have my own horse/ponies so have never shared or had a sharer.

I'll probably get shot down in flames but I'm presuming that most people who look for a sharer is because they can't afford the time and/or money. If it's the time then I think it's awful to charge a sharer as they are doing you a favour and if it's money then maybe you need to re-evaluate having a horse as we all know how expensive they and how they manage to time the biggest vet bills to the week before payday.... Just my view and not having a go at anyone.

I have 3 horses but I don't "click" riding my arab mare so advertised for a rider and only wanted my tack kept clean in return but got cheeky woman phoning saying she didn't think she'd manage that, could I have the horse tacked up for her arriving and at least it was cheaper than lessons?!!?

That prompted me to change the add to sharer but due to the time of year (I think) and the fact I only put the add in saddlery and feed store I never got any replies.

I posted on here about the problems I was having with Shiraz looking for advice and to see if there was anything I haven't tried before and someone PM'd me who lived locally and was interested in exercising her. She's been out a couple of times now to ride, is totally lovely and likes Shiraz, plus S likes her which is the main thing! I trust her totally already and we seem to have the same ideas on horsemanship etc. She is doing me a favour by making my horse happy and I wouldn't dream of charging for that. Currently she's out to ride 2x a week and 1x at weekends though I'm flexible to her riding more/less and having lessons on S when she is fit. We're going to give it a month and then start fresh in Jan and see what the situ is then, if she WANTS to contribute or make a more sort of permanent agreement then that's fine with me. Just as long as S is happy

aww thanks (I'm Shiraz's "sharer/rider"), i feel all special now!

i do agree though ive been in many situations where the owner uses the sharer for their own financial benefit and bringing on difficult horses so they are sellable at better prices - been there done that and am no longer a gullible fool!

on the other hand I've been lucky to find Jill and Shiraz as she really does only care about the welfare of her horses so of course im happy to help out and buy stuff etc and all going well when we review in January i will be more than happy to make a financial contribution to Shiraz's upkeep (we are both as skint as each other anyway LOL!)

The ones that need "starting from scratch" or "ground work with my 2 year old colt", that expect you to pay £30 a week for the privledge make me laugh! If im doing that, then you should be paying me.

I wouldn't pay more than £30 a week, for that I would expect a very nice horse, good facilities, but would help out mucking out etc, take on its care.
 
My sharer used to pay £15 p/w for 2 set days a week riding, and the odd other day when i wasnt about, she only had to bring in, groom, ride and feed. No mucking out.

I have a girl who rides to a much better standard than me who rides her occasionally now (sharer left) and she never pays or vice versa.

Howver due to my lack of time i am now looking to put Splash on loan as she struggled to bond with sharers who really only wanted to ride and i struggled to find a decent one. My last one was lovely and reliable it just didnt work out.
