A Question For The Barefoot Taliban!!

I've always felt that its best for horses to be barefoot.... There's too many pros to ignore ;-)

So I've looked into podiatrists (sp?) in my area and there isn't any.

I've found two barefoot trimmers but not sure if they're any good! Im in North Devon.

The first is Clive at Blue Moon Equine Hoof Care and
Caroline Andreson.

Does anyone know who I should use or avoid?

I've heard good things of both, particularly Caroline Andresson, as I think she covers areas near me and a lot of people rate her. I don't think my trimmer goes down as far as you, though. Check out the UKNHCP website for any of their trimmers who cover the area.

How do you find out if there are any good ones in your area, my long term aim is to go barefoot but it will be a slow process for me as lots of things to sort before I pull the shoes off, diet being a major one :D

I keep a spare beard in my desk at work for emergencies ;).

Word of mouth is the best way of finding a good trimmer, but I would generally feel fairly safe with a uknhcp trimmer.
 
Try contacting Nic Barker at Rockley Farm, I know they are somewhere on Exmoor. Just google Rockley Farm and they have a big website, they may be able to hep you with a local renown barefoot trimmer, if your own farrier won't do it.

I personally wouldn't use a podiatrist as they have no formal need for qualifications like farriers have. At least I know that my farrier has been trained fully in all aspects of horse feet, trimming as well as shoeing and I trust him implicately. I have 3 horses, all barefoot one an ex endurance pony who did all his competing barefoot ....

However, I know that not all farriers will do barefoot trimming as they need the dosh from shoeing to keep themselves afloat and a roof over their families heads.
 
I've recently moved yards and the farrier I used and highly rates won't come to where I am now as it's out of his area as well as only coming out to do one horse which is understandable.

The farrier that will come out to me hasn't the greatest reputation so as the mare has had an abscess and now trying to find a farrier is becoming more difficult it's almost made me look further into going barefoot.
