A question for those with hot horses...

What clip do you do over winter and what rugs do you use (if any)?

She is blanket clipped. She was out in a medium (200g) necked yesterday, but was still very hot. So may have to put a lightweight on her for day time. She has a 200g rug on overnight as is toasty warm in that.

I had a thoroughbred mare 2 winters ago that was a project and she had a trace clip and spent most of the time in either a fleece or very light weight stable rug when in and just one medium weight turnout with a neck. Have never had such a 'hot' horse before was actually really nice not having to lump about heavy rugs

My hot cob is clipped out and just wears a Thermatex in the winter. She has thin rug underneath as well if the temperatures drop to below freezing (at least minus 5!)overnight. She has Sweet Itch so has a tendency to being itchy so I think slightly cooler is better.

Thanks He currently has underside of neck and belly taken off and is sometimes roasting when he comes in from the field, when he has been naked all day!

Not clipped. No rugs except oldies if wet for a few days on the trot

Mine has a high chaser clip, a rainsheet on when out, and naked in the stable. He would be too hot with anything else, and tbh I would put him out naked because he is always toastie!! YO rugs him though, and it is nice having a clean horse instead of a hippo!

My hot cob is hunter clipped, out in day in a light weight or 100 gram at the moment. Will go up to a 200 gm in day for most of the winter. If horrendously cold will go up to 300 gm in day.
At night he is in a 200 gm atm. Will go up to 400 in the coldest of the weather overnight.

Why don't you go for a hunter with legs left on and a half face. Even with this my hot mare would be out with a lightweight on in this weather. She is having everything off within the next couple of weeks, including her 1.5 foot mane and will be in a 100g stable rug at night until it really turns.

Only when it was minus fifteen did I have to pull out a h/w rug last year.

My hot cob will get a hunter clip this weekend, legs and face left on as she lives out. She will.mostly live in her 100g rug.
