Obviously I have Roly, (see below) when we lost my old dog we always swore we'd have two - for company/playmates etc.

So the time has come to get Roly a pal. Firstly Roly is quite a outgoing pup - should I be looking for a similar type - or a more quiet pup? (maybe thats a silly question as you dont really know til you get them home)

Also Roly is waiting for his second jab (in a week and a half thank god) so can I get a pup who is fully vaccinated? OR should I just wait until Roly is fully vaccinated too?

Then lastly, some people have said that Roly might lose a bit of his relationship with us (which I was also warned against getting a sibling for) so would the same be applicable for a non-littermate pal? I dont want either of them to not like us!!!

Thanks guys!
PS - Rols slept through the night in his crate with one pee stop - Im very proud!!!

I was told by my vet to get one sooner rather than later so he doesn't get jealous.
Training two isnt a problem as Ive always had two dogs - well apart from when the older one died.

I have a dog who is 7yrs & have one now who is 19mnths, there was no jealousy between them but I treat them equally! So she was alone for 6yrs!
I would wait till your current one is fully vaccinated at least if not till taining coming on.

I would also consider waiting a little while before getting another one, a few months wont make any difference as Roly will still be a pup, and you will have got most of his training out of the way.

Spencer was 2 when I got Cujo, there has never been any jealousy and they are both entire males.

I have found more jealousy among my dogs close in age than when there is an older/younger dog. IMHO, when there is some difference in age the older dog usually takes the alpha role. When the dogs are close in age there is more jockeying for the alpha position and more conflict. Also if your pup is doing well at house training, getting a new untrained pup might cause Roly to have a set back. Getting two pups closer in age will also cause them to bond more with each other instead of you. I firmly believe that waiting until Roly is done with his shots, reliably house trained and has some basic obedience training would be best. At any rate I would recommend getting a pup of the opposite sex than Roly and having it spayed/neutered. A dog/bitch combo seems to usually get along better than dog/dog, bitch/bitch.

BTW, he's a cute little devil.

Do you know Ive had such mixed answers on this!
My old dogs - a bitch and a dog scrapped ALL the time - it was a mother and son thing I think! I have often seen mixed couples get along well, but when asking on another forum, people suggested a same sex mix would be better!!

Ach - what a pain! Have no problems waiting for jabs, I want the best for my dogs after all.

The JRT forum said in the main part that it would be no problem having two pups of the same age - even siblings.

Lots of things to think on which I think maybe dictates that its probably down to the individual dog and situation?

At age four, Stella was very accepting of another dog we brought into the home (sadly, he was not so enthralled by her).

I would wait a while, ideally until young adulthood. Your pup's "true" personality will come through by then, allowing you to choose a second dog that is compatible.
